Carpenter, Snider send 51s past Padres

Andrew Carpenter pitched seven shutout innings, and Travis Snider belted a three-run homer to carry the 51s to an 8-2 victory over the Tucson Padres in a Pacific Coast League game Tuesday night in Tucson, Ariz.

Carpenter (5-2) scattered seven hits, struck out three and didn't issue a walk as Las Vegas (40-31) improved to 7-1 against the Padres (22-49) this season.

The 51s jumped on Tucson starter Kip Wells (1-4) from the beginning, as Anthony Gose led off with a triple and scored on Adeiny Hechavarria's sacrifice fly.

Hechavarria struck again in the third, hitting an RBI double after Jonathan Diaz reached on an error and Gose walked. Snider then followed with his sixth home run of the season for a 5-0 lead.

Las Vegas scored its other runs on a sacrifice fly by Diaz in the fourth inning, a bases-loaded walk by Moises Sierra in the fifth and an RBI groundout by Eric Thames in the ninth.

Wells gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and five walks and struck out one in 4 1/3 innings

Evan Crawford followed Carpenter to the mound for the 51s and pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts. Bobby Korecky gave up both Tucson runs in the ninth, on Sawyer Carroll's two-run double with one out.

Travis d'Arnaud, Adam Lind and Kevin Howard had two hits each for Las Vegas, which had a 10-9 edge in hits.

Andy Parrino and Anthony Contreras each had three hits for the Padres.
