Crusaders, Eagles standouts claim Heisman
Faith Lutheran track athlete Ryan Bartholomew and Boulder City softball, volleyball and basketball standout Paxton Fleming have been named state winners of the Wendy's High School Heisman.
Both seniors are now in the running for the national award, which will be announced Dec. 11 in New York. Last year's male national award went to The Meadows football and basketball player Brett Leibowitz.
The award honors high school seniors who excel in academics, athletics and community leadership.
Bartholomew, a distance runner, was 17th at last year's Class 3A state cross country meet, finishing the 3.1-mile race in 19:10. He'll compete in track this season.
Fleming, a catcher, hit .642 with 44 RBIs to lead Boulder City's softball team to a 32-5 record last season.
She also plays setter for the Eagles' volleyball team, which faces Yerington in a 3A state semifinal Friday, and is a guard in basketball.
• 2A FOOTBALL HONORS -- State semifinalists The Meadows (9-1) and Mountain View (9-2) dominated 2A Southern League football honors.
The Meadows' Frank DeSantis was named Coach of the Year, sophomore quarterback Garrett Gosse (1,880 yards, 28 touchdowns) the Offensive Most Valuable Player and senior offensive guard/nose guard Andrew Duddlesten the Lineman of the Year.
Mountain View senior running back Cortland LeBoeuf (1,624 yards, 18 TDs) took Player of the Year, and senior linebacker Steven Abdelsayed (115 tackles, three sacks) was the Defensive MVP.
• 1A VOLLEYBALL HONORS -- State semifinalist Lake Mead (31-4) swept 1A Southern League volleyball honors.
Outside hitters Ashley Newton and Amanda Wellman shared MVP, and Diana Lewis took Coach of the Year.
