Emotional Curtis captures Texas Open for first Tour title since 2006
SAN ANTONIO - Ben Curtis won the Texas Open on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title since 2006, holding off Matt Every and John Huh in a tense back-nine finish for a two-stroke victory.
Curtis birdied the par-5 18th hole for an even-par 72 and 9-under 279 total. It was a redeeming and emotional win for the 2003 British Open winner, who had only limited tour status after a long slump.
Curtis has four PGA Tour titles, also winning the 2006 Booz Allen Classic and 84 Lumber Classic.
After the round, Curtis fought back tears while saying: "It's been a tough couple of years."
Every shot 71 and lost a chance at his first tour win with four blown putts. Huh, the Mayakoba Classic winner, shot 69.
■ INDONESIAN - At Jakarta, Indonesia, third-ranked Lee Westwood defended his Indonesian Masters title with a two-stroke victory despite a shaky final round.
The 39-year-old Englishman, who completed his delayed third round with a 7-under 65 to take an eight-shot lead, shot 2-over 74 in the final round for a 16-under 272 total.
Former top-ranked Asian Tour player Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand shot 5-under 67 to take second at 274.
■ CHAMPIONS - At Savannah, Ga., David Frost and Michael Allen shot a better-ball 10-under 62 for a 29-under 187 total and a one-stroke victory over John Cook and Joey Sindelar in the Champions Tour Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf championship.
