Fishing Report

■ LAKE MEAD -- Anglers using cut anchovies and sardines are finding action for striped bass in the upper lake area, from the Overton Arm to Temple Bar and on to South Cove. Nighttime fishing below lights has been especially productive. The fish are generally small, running about 1 to 2 pounds, but three fish topping 20 pounds have been caught recently.

Nevada Department of Wildlife biologists have reported striper boils near The Meadows in the Overton Arm, but have yet to see them in the lower basin. The Vegas Wash area continues to produce fish and action, and the Hemenway Area has shown signs of improvement. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are taking plastics and crankbaits thrown near flooded brush.

The top three places in a bass tourney last weekend were taken with five-fish bags weighing 11 pounds or more.

■ LAKE MOHAVE -- Striper fishing remains slow to fair for anglers still-fishing with cut anchovies and sardines or slow-trolling baits in water to 50 feet deep. The black bass bite has been good, with plastic baits and jigs catching the fish.

Anglers working the coves and bays are finding fair action for catfish and panfish. Near Willow Beach, double-digit striped bass are hitting swimbaits that resemble stocked rainbow trout in size and color. The Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery plants rainbow trout each Friday.

■ LAUGHLIN -- Striped bass fishing has picked up. Cut anchovies are catching the fish. Trout enthusiasts are still catching rainbow trout along casino row and south to Big Bend.

■ LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS -- Bluegill fishing is good at Floyd Lamb Park. The fish are biting on meal worms, wax worms or red worms. A common mistake anglers make is using hooks that are too large. For bluegill, use a number 12 or 14 bait hook and fish near vegetation. Catfish action has slowed but should pick up after the next fish plant in mid-July.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- Largemouth bass action has picked up. The fish are already off their nests at Dacey, but still on them at the other reservoirs. The fish are hitting plastics and spinner baits.

Trout anglers continue to find success fishing from dams. In recent days, anglers have been surprised to find crappie in Adams-McGill and Cold Springs. Area supervisor Marcus Jones said crappie have been in management area reservoirs for a while, but this is the first year they've shown up in the catch.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Anglers are catching limits of stocked rainbow trout. Most are in the 10- to 11-inch range and are taking PowerBait or night crawlers combined with a mini-marshmallow. Weeds are just beginning to show up at the reservoir's upper end, but the lake is still easily accessible to boaters.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Largemouth bass and crappie are biting. Bass are hitting plastic worms, while the crappie are biting on a small Gitzit in watermelon color fished about 3 feet below a bobber.
