Fishing Report, Feb. 23

■ LAKE MEAD -- Fishing remains slow overall, but anglers are picking up a few striped bass in the Vegas Wash area and between Echo Bay and Overton Landing. Boaters are having the best luck. Some anglers are marking fish, but can't get them to bite.

■ LAKE MOHAVE -- Angler traffic has been heavy at Willow Beach as eager fishermen search for large stripers. The action hasn't been fast, but boaters have reeled in several double-digit stripers the past two weeks. Striped bass in this area key in on rainbow trout planted each week by the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery. Farther south, fishing has slowed considerably for all species. Some anglers are picking up largemouth bass while fishing structure with drop shot rigs and plastic baits.

■ LAUGHLIN -- Fishing remains good for stocked rainbows from Davis Camp south past Casino Row. Some anglers reportedly are finding fish in the 3- to 4-pound range. The fish seem to prefer night crawlers. The bite has been slow for other species.

■ LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS -- Anglers continue to find fair to good fishing. The Nevada Department of Wildlife plants rainbow trout each week at Floyd Lamb Park, Sunset Park and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. Small fly patterns such as a Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear or Pheasant Tail can be productive in these waters. So can traditional trout baits such as worms, mini-marshmallows and PowerBait.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- All reservoirs are free of ice, but anglers will find skim ice along the edges early in the morning. The water still is murky. Area manager Marcus Jones said those conditions probably will continue longer than normal because of continuing cold temperatures. With the exception of Cold Springs, all boat ramps are open. The Cold Springs ramp still is iced in.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Anglers continue to pull 12- to 14-inch rainbows through the ice at this Lincoln County reservoir. Productive baits include PowerBait in green or orange, a white jig with a pink head, and the classic combination of mini-marshmallows and night crawlers.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- The reservoir still is covered with ice but is beginning to open up. Fishing opportunities are limited, as the ice is too thin for anglers. If water is open along the dam, this can be a good area for rainbow trout, largemouth bass and crappie.
