FOOTBALL: South to host this year’s 4A state title game

When football season began, it looked as if the Class 4A state title game would be in Reno.

That changed this week.

The state championship game, which originally was listed to be played at a Northern Nevada site, instead will take place at Sam Boyd Stadium. The game is scheduled for noon Dec. 4.

One of the state semifinal sites also was changed. The Sunrise Region champion now will travel to the host site of the Northern Region champion for a 1 p.m. kickoff Nov. 27.

The changes were made after it was discovered the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's policy had been misapplied when brackets first were posted in July.

In 2006, the state's coaches associations and the NIAA agreed to a six-year cycle for determining postseason sites.

This is the fifth year of the six-year cycle.

■ THOMPSON MAKES COLLEGE CHOICE -- Canyon Springs senior guard Michael Thompson gave an oral commitment to Boise State on Tuesday, choosing the Broncos after an official visit last weekend.

"It's a great feeling, just an amazing feeling to get all the pressure out of the way," Thompson said.

The 6-foot-2-inch Thompson said Boise State recruited him as a point guard.

Thompson earned second-team all-state honors last season after averaging 16.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists while leading the Pioneers to a 26-4 record and the Class 4A state title game.

■ MCCORMICK COMMITS -- Palo Verde softball standout Melissa McCormick committed recently to Towson.

McCormick, a senior pitcher, was a first-team all-state selection last season after she went 26-10 with a 1.25 ERA and 326 strikeouts in 235 innings.

■ BERG RESIGNS -- Coronado boys basketball coach Paul Berg has resigned after nine seasons at the school.

Berg led the Cougars to a 23-7 record last season when the team advanced to the Sunrise Region semifinals.

Berg now is dean of students at Mack Middle School.
