Henderson International girls cruise past Beatty

Henderson International's girls basketball team entered the Class 1A Southern League tournament seeking the first postseason win in program history.

If the Wolverines can play every first quarter as they did Tuesday, they might make winning in the playoffs a habit.

Fourth-seeded Henderson International scored the first 17 points on the way to a 48-29 quarterfinal win at home over fifth-seeded Beatty.

"The girls and I talked a lot about how we wanted to throw the first punch," Wolverines coach Amanda Hall said. "We kind of wanted to jump out there and let them know early that we're here to fight."

Henderson International (16-8) entered the second quarter up 13-0 and held Beatty (17-9) scoreless until more than two minutes into the second period.

The Wolverines advanced to play No. 1 seed Pahranagat Valley at 6:20 p.m. Friday at Durango in a semifinal with a ticket to the state tournament on the line. Lund will play Lake Mead in the other semifinal, at 3 Friday.

Brittany Huff led the Wolverines with 15 points, five rebounds and four steals.

"We started feeling the momentum," Huff said of the 17-0 start. "We're pretty confident in our defense."

Henderson International's Ashlyn Barela had nine points and four assists, and Lee Harrison grabbed eight rebounds.
