Henry latest from Cheyenne to go Division I in basketball
Cheyenne's boys basketball team highlighted the end of the NCAA early signing period Nov. 18 by sending a fourth player to the Division I level in the past two years.
Desert Shields post player Jaylen Henry signed with Eastern Washington, joining guard Chris McCall (Montana State), who signed earlier in the week. Cheyenne guards Elijah Johnson (Kansas) and Demetric Williams (Wichita State) signed last year.
Other late signings include: Spring Valley baseball player Aaron Blair (Marshall); Palo Verde softball player Erika Stratton (Bowling Green); Coronado girls swimmer Alix Mertel (New Mexico State); Palo Verde girls swimmer Mikayda Mills (Louisiana State); and Palo Verde girls volleyball player Ainsley Lovejoy (Cornell).
Football seniors who said they have given recent commitments include Palo Verde defensive end Daniel Godkin (UNR) and safety Tyrone Blake (Northern Arizona) and Clark running back Andre Clay (Southern Utah).
Godkin, though, still will make an official visit to Navy in January. He has scholarship offers from UNLV, Wyoming, Northern Arizona and Southern Utah.
• 3A HONORS -- Moapa Valley senior Matt Newton led Class 3A Southern League football honors by being named Most Valuable Player and a first-team receiver, cornerback and punter.
Moapa Valley junior quarterback Kelan Weiss took Offensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Jake Pearce was Defensive Player of the Year and Brent Lewis the Coach of the Year.
In girls volleyball, for Virgin Valley, junior middle blocker Rachel Morris took MVP and Lori Barnum Coach of the Year.
In boys soccer, for Virgin Valley, senior midfielder Joel Medina took MVP and Bob Snell Coach of the Year. The Meadows' Toby Warburton was Offensive Player of the Year and Boulder City's Jon Lyon the Defensive Player of the Year.
In girls soccer, White Pine's Teal Collins was MVP, and Boulder City's Duncan Stark was Coach of the Year. Offensive Player of the Year went to Virgin Valley's Kiera Ogden and Defensive Player of the Year to Boulder City's Jen King.
