Hoffpauir’s homer in eighth lifts Iowa to victory over 51s

Micah Hoffpauir hit a tiebreaking two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, sending the Iowa Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the 51s on Tuesday in a Pacific Coast League game in Des Moines, Iowa.

Iowa had just four hits but three went for extra bases, including Hoffpauir's homer off reliever Dirk Hayhurst (4-5).

Vince Perkins (6-2) blew the save opportunity, walking Angel Sanchez to bring home the tying run in the top of the eighth, but picked up the victory on Hoffpauir's first home run in four games with Iowa since being demoted by the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Iowa (59-58) grabbed a 2-0 lead on Bobby Scales' two-run single in the fourth inning.

Las Vegas (58-60) drew within a run on Aaron Mathews' RBI single in the fifth.

Brian Dopirak had three hits for the 51s, and Howie Clark and Todd Snider each added two.

Luis Rivas had a double and a triple for the Cubs.

Las Vegas finishes the four-game series at Iowa with a 10:05 a.m. (PDT) game today before returning to Cashman Field for an eight-game homestand beginning with a 7:05 p.m. game against Albuquerque on Friday.
