HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 5 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Smokey Beau - Beaten chalk may be more value today with Juan Leyva up; his race two back is fast enough to destroy these.
Warren's Big Eagle - One of the worst races you will ever see at Santa Anita; the less career starts the better in here.
Long Shot - Valiant Wonderboy
Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $52,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Lady Alex - Big winner is an obvious bounce candidate; if she pairs big races, she'll win this by a pole or two.
Saucey Evening - Gets class relief in a confidence booster; she has been more productive on synthetic than sod.
Long Shot - Value Stream
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $24,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds
Guerrero Negro - Among 4 who just graduated last out; he has improved a lot with the addition of blinkers on.
Show the Flag - Leap of faith that Rafael Bejarano can squeeze more out of him; parking lot post to clock the speed.
Long Shot - Worth a Punt
Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $16,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
The Legal Blonde - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; grinder has a big class edge.
Dame Camille - With only 2 career starts, there is a chance she'll improve; like Chantal Sutherland on a bomb.
Long Shot - Nubian Princess
Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $14,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Pivotal Queen - You'll have to accept a lousy ride on a horse who looks tons the best; weight the pros and the cons.
Lucy Got Lucky - Tepid chalk in another bummer of a field; won for fun in maiden win, won't be facing much tougher here.
Long Shot - Soldier Betty
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Cee Bargara - Can't tell you how much money I've lost on this horse; love the rider switch to Tyler Baze for the money shot. S
Within Reason - Speedball tactics could finally win out with turf rail out 24 feet; clearly lone speed, the one to catch.
Long Shot - Crossing the Line
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $48,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Smart Seattle - May have been best in last when boxed in most of the way; suspect she will get overlooked with Mike Smith.
Sister Dawn - Highly regarded filly is facing winners for the first time and a 2-turn test; she may be this good.
Long Shot - Harissa
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Torrey Cliffs - Like the turn back in distance down the hillside turf course; third start off a 2-month hiatus.
Spanish Bunny - Tepid chalk in a card fraught with danger; her prior races down the hill have been competitive.
Long Shot - Foxy Approval
Best Bet - Smart Seattle (race 7)
Santa Anita Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/6/$71.00; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 720/189/$1,265.00; Long Shots, 358/51/$533.80; Best Bets, 44/16/$75.40
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #6 Proud Osceola (6/1) in race 9 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Wednesday, Cause of Freedom won at Tampa Bay paying $4.60 to win, $3.00 to place, and $2.10 to show. Stats - 44/31/$212.60
