HORSE RACING
June 18, 2009 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Magic Yodeler - Got an education in debut, now should be ready to fire; Mike Harrington and his Swiss Yodeler babies, say no more.
Triple Cream - FTS from David Hofmans barn, which is sizzling red-hot; you'll have an edge of seeing the tote board action.
Long Shot - Ballistic Sue
Race 2 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Warren's Tony R. - Not much difference between Cal-Bred $40K and MSW; like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal to the cause.
Blackbriar - Tepid chalk in a wide open turf route; when trainer Matt Chew wins races, it is seldom as the betting favorite.
Long Shot - Pop'shands Are Hot
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $50,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Birdie Birdie - Exits a key race where Patricia's Gem and Hot 'n Dusty won next out; will improve for Julio Canani.
Smooth Performer - Sharp win last time over Cal-bred lesser lites; she remains eligible for open NW1X, which is an edge.
Long Shot - Life by R R
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Practical Magic - Speedball did everything but win last time; should enjoy the slight turn back in distance for today.
Best of Intentions - Ran OK in last, first time for a price tag; gets a parking lot post, Bejarano will clock the speed.
Long Shot - Papoose La Moose
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $50,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Hameildaeme - Exits a key race where she fought hard to the bitter end; Sorenson will need to carve out a trip from post 8.
Dailies - She has been running her eyeballs out facing easier; she deserves this test as she is in rare form now.
Long Shot - Andalacia
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Sweetpea - Surprised nobody claimed her last time, sign of a bad economy; Jeff Mullins got away with one, finds a soft spot here.
Indomitable - Claimed by Melody Conlon, this speedball may not stop; will always get a square price with Valdez riding.
Long Shot - Joint Agreement
Race 7 - 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), $70,000 Robert Kerlan Memorial Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Get Funky - Tepid vote in another difficult heat; will save all the ground under Garrett Gomez and hope to fire fast late.
Hewitts - Speedball offers good value at 6/1 odds; figures to lead, or at worst, sit just off Backbackbackgone on the lead.
Long Shot - Delta Storm
Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
I'm Bulletproof - Away 10-months since beating much better at Del Mar; fresh, fit and dangerous to upset a motley crew.
All Money No Love - Weak favorite also comes off the shelf after full year; he too faced much stronger in last year's action.
Long Shot - Don't Forget Muq
Best Bet - Sweetpea (race 6)
Hollywood Park Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/2/$27.20; Long Shots, 8/2/$21.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Park Totals - 582/142/$1020.80; Long Shots, 292/48/$528.00; Best Bets, 32/10/$39.40
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #4 Trevelyan (4/1) in race 4 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Here Comes Ben won at Churchill Downs paying $3.40 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats - 85/67/$492.90
