July 17, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $26,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
B. A. Homebody - May get overlooked due to the low percentage jockey and trainer; big shot off her last two good efforts.
Molitta - Favorite is strictly the one to beat; Vladimir Cerin has used the bugboy Campos on some live animals.
Long Shot - Could She
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $10,000, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
Touchdown Call - Bill Morey apparently has brought a few live horses to run at Del Mar; priced right to win, and get claimed.
Devoted Magic - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low class level; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Long Shot - Oldtophatandtails
Race 3 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $44,000, Maiden claiming $100,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Goodday - Ran very well in debut despite facing a much softer group; still, she should be able to step up and maintain.
Track Majesty - Leap of faith in trainer Adam Kitchingman; he is an under the radar, one of the best baby trainers in SoCal.
Long Shot - Kalapana
Race 4 - 5 furlongs (turf), Purse $64,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Whatsitgonnatake - Mike Mitchell claim has found a cozy post and spot to excel; can sit the pocket behind a speed duel.
Wickednwackyingrid - This is a speedball personified so Martin Pedroza has little choice; goes as fast and as far as she can.
Long Shot - Zilla
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Olympic Stripes - 5-YO debut race was not bad; suspect Wilmot didn't have the lemon squeezed, improvement expected.
Afleet's Design - While his resume looks awful, he was just claimed by Jerry Hollendorfer; hires leading jockey Bejarano.
Long Shot - Star Carson
Race 6 - 1 mile, Purse $63,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Bullsbay - Second start off a 4-month hiatus; he appears to have a lot of talent but still needs to put it all together.
Cherokee Tear - He was my best bet two races ago when beat a head at 7/2 odds; offers value though he'll need to run his best.
Long Shot - Matty's G Force
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $63,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Distant Victory - Her MSW win was visually a bomb; the rise from MSW graduate to face winners is steep, but she's the goods.
Pokomoke - Exits a miserable race, but his race two back is fast enough to upset; choice if you are a forgiving handicapper.
Long Shot - Spinning Yarns
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 2-year-olds
It's in the Fridge - Peter Miller has an uncoupled entry and this one is the higher odds; FTS by Smooth Jazz, we'll see.
Brave Justice - Ran evenly in debut and faces no apparent monsters here; has a shot if he improves a step or two.
Long Shot - Rodeo Cowboy
Best Bet - Bullsbay (race 6)
Del Mar Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$46.60; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 0/0/$0
Hollywood Final Totals - 983/229/$1,563.60; Long Shots, 496/50/$495.80; Best Bets, 58/24/$98.00
