HORSE RACING

TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Sweet Yvett - Talk about a dart throw of a race; showed speed last time from post 11 and held well to mid-stretch.

Jaded Illusion - FTS from Adam Kitchingman; this is a leap of faith because he is one of the best baby trainers in SoCal.

Long Shot - Octoberfest

Race 2 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Miss Dixie Dancer - Sharp debut win albeit facing softer in NoCal; she is protected today facing winners for the first time.

Upper Manhattan - Gets big time class relief from the Cinderella for this starter allowance; figures to be a strong player.

Long Shot - Epitome of a Lady

Race 3 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $34,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Sheza Maneater - Has the look of lone speed on a very firm turf course; Quinonez will need to nurse her energy early.

Lovely Olivia - Been freshened 3-months and returns to her preferred surface; Bejarano will be rallying from far back.

Long Shot - Tripped the Light

Race 4 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 2-year-olds

The Final Roar - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; has chased good ones like Azul Leon.

Form a Posse - Another taking the big dip from MSW to maiden claiming; my top two choices were both flattered by Candy Lion.

Long Shot - Satyrs

Race 5 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Steam Iron - Freshened 2-months by Jerry Fanning, who had a win spurt this spring with Alex Solis; expect some improvement.

Can Can Girl - Showed good speed and gumption until deep stretch in last; facing a miserable group, she may forget to stop.

Long Shot - Virgin

Race 6 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $58,000, Claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Brendolyn - Well spotted by John Sadler to win; this was one of the few horses in his barn to not win a race at Hollywood.

Nootka Island - Claimed by Mike Mitchell and smartly placed; Mitchell has an uncoupled entry, this is the longer odds horse.

Long Shot - The King's Lass

Race 7 - 5 1/2 furlongs, $125,000 Graduation, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

Atlantra's Tantrum - Did his racing in NoCal before coming south to Mike Mitchell; if the colt can run, well see it today.

Babs Moossa - Logical chalk was flattered, too much so, by an insane suicide pace at Solano; respect the top connections.

Long Shot - Triumphant Flight

Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Promise Rose - Ran the most promising race last time, so is the logical favorite; Sherluck barn has been ice cold of late.

Las Patronas Lady - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to compete.

Long Shot - Haleakala Heat

Best Bet - The Final Roar (race 4)

Del Mar Monday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/2/$11.00; Long Shots, 8/2/$16.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Del Mar Totals - 96/22/$153.00; Long Shots, 52/6/$66.60; Best Bets, 6/2/$12.40
