HORSE RACING
August 7, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $26,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Friendly Mystery - Two things going for her; she broke slow in debut, then rushed up, second time Dollase babies do improve.
B. A. Homebody - Fought hard and long but settled for second best; if she runs a repeat race here, she'll be in the hunt late.
Long Shot - Morgan Lane
Race 2 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $68,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds
Yes It's a Cat - With the turf rail out 14 feet, let's go for the likely speed horse; Clinton Potts plays catch me if you can.
Robscarvic - Gets big time class relief from graded stakes for this; Jerry Hollendorfer takes over, wants a confidence builder.
Long Shot - Bingham
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $34,000, Maiden claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
Onetimeatbandcamp - Ran a winning race for this class level in last; question will be if he can repeat that good effort.
Taleitlikeitain't - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Michael Baze is a patient rider.
Long Shot - Blaze N Waggin
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds
Public Image - Huge class from allowance to this low level claimer; may get some value with low percentage rider Contreras.
Adhere - Speedball is another taking a big class drop; Martin Pedroza may try to bottom out the field and hope no one passes.
Long Shot - Cavanaugh
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Smooch - Sharp win last time so the key will be if she can duplicate the finish; from the clever Ron Ellis, I'd bet on it.
Tricky Viviana - She was the epitome of "herd mentality" where she refused to win; now maybe she has gotten the hang of it.
Long Shot - Yearly Gift
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $44,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Afleet's Desire - Jerry Hollendorfer barn is en fuego and Rafael Bejarano is one of the keys; will sit a trip and fire late.
Udriga - If a speedball wins this, she if the most likely candidate; Periban uses the bugboy to send and save some weight.
Long Shot - Shebang
Race 7 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $63,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Distant Victory - She has won twice like a filly with a high ceiling; she faces open company for the first time, good spot.
Blanche Sweet - Dead late closer will sit the garden spot as In My Glory figures to leave; her best stride will come late.
Long Shot - In My Glory
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Brave Justice - Beaten favorite ran a much improved race last time; if he improves another step, he'll be awful tough.
Got Alot Going - Parking lot post could create a problem at this abbreviated distance; Bejarano hopes to save ground somehow.
Long Shot - Coastal Souvenir
Best Bet - Public Image (race 4)
Del Mar Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 14/4/$32.00; Long Shots, 7/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.60
Del Mar Totals - 307/72/$547.20; Long Shots, 159/20/$242.40; Best Bets, 19/7/$32.60
