Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Dec. 28
December 27, 2013 - 9:29 pm
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/8th miles, Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Big Wags - Underrated barn claims from Bill Spawr; should get a square price with unknown Tammi Piermarini up.
3 Tiz Dynamic - Tepid chalk gets a huge rider switch to Corey Nakatani; if Corey is focused, he could have a strong meet.
Long Shot - 6 Second City
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
6 San Onofre - One of the most impressive MSW wins of the year was this guy; not sure what he beat, so this is a good test.
4 Life a Riley - When Bill Spawr claims a horse, expect steady improvement; like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal.
Long Shot - 5 Topper’s Ghost
Race 3 - 7 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 2-year-olds
4 Echo Zulu - Slight edge in a very evenly balanced field; like his tactical speed to sit just off the early pacesetters.
3 Brando the Birdman - Became eligible for this when raced for a price tag in debut; like his MSW win, next logical step up.
Long Shot - 7 Market Notes
Race 4 - 1 mile (turf), $75,000 Eddie Logan, 2-year-olds
3 Craftsman - Simon Callaghan has a well earned reputation with Euro invaders; he’s an Englishman himself and knows the breed.
2 Enterprising - Tom Proctor and Gary Stevens continue to sing a great duet; big step up in class but don’t underestimate them.
Long Shot - 8 Royal Banker
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
8 Pimpernel - Did a classic pop and stop in a well bet debut; he should more forward which spells trouble for the rest.
1 Gameboy Luke - Gets a big rider switch to Corey Nakatani for the money shot; has speed and the rail, options.
Long Shot - 2 Indian Smoke
Race 6 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
1 Ontology - Hard to believe he’s been in graded stakes while still a maiden; hope it didn’t take the mental starch out of him.
6 Kozani - This could spell a decent day for Corey Nakatani; second time out for John Sadler, expect improvement.
Long Shot - 4 Miraglo
Race 7 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
8 Seeking the Sherif - Exploded for a big MSW win for Gary Mandella; he’s conservative like his dad, well spotted here.
3 Three Vases - Is claim proof in returning off a 9-month sabbatical; will be double tough if fit off workouts alone.
Long Shot - 5 Tribal Smoke
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), $100,000 Daytona, 3-year-olds and up
2 Chips All In - Has won 4-of-6 starts over Santa Anita sod, horse for course; Jeff Mullins barn is ready to go.
4 Unbridled’s Note - Logical chalk just hasn’t shown the same killer instinct; still quite fast, is again extremely dangerous.
Long Shot - 5 Handsome Mike
Race 9 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
11 Exotic Behavior - Bob Baffert culls are still very well bred animals; takes a huge class drop to face much easier.
7 Red Barris - Claimed by Steve Knapp who runs her right back in the same class; key vote is from Rafael Bejarano taking the call.
Long Shot - 5 Miraculous Mindy
Best Bet - 6 San Onofre (race 2)
Santa Anita Park Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/5/$27.00; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.40
Santa Anita Park Totals - 32/10/$53.60; Long Shots, 17/1/$15.00; Best Bets, 2/1/$3.40
