Hughes’ layup lifts Sandy Valley to win

Brandon Hughes' layup with 15 seconds left Wednesday allowed Sandy Valley's boys basketball team to post a 36-35 win over visiting Tonopah in a Class 1A Southern League quarterfinal.
The fourth-seeded Sidewinders (13-6) rallied from a 33-26 deficit after three quarters to collect the first boys basketball postseason win in school history. They'll face top-seeded Pahranagat Valley at 8 p.m. Friday at Sunrise Mountain.
Randal Spencer tallied 17 points and Hughes 13 for Sandy Valley.
Seth Littlefield led the fifth-seeded Muckers (4-14) with 12 points.
■ Round Mountain 62, Beatty 61 -- At Round Mountain, Serjio Chavez's short jumper just before time expired in the second overtime lifted the third-seeded Knights (18-4) past the sixth-seeded Hornets (9-7).
Chavez, who missed a short jumper at the end of regulation, finished with 25 points for the Knights, who will meet Spring Mountain at 4:40 p.m. Friday at Sunrise Mountain.
Cole Shrider added 14 points, including a basket with 1.6 seconds left in the first overtime, for Round Mountain, which got 12 points from Carlos Chavez and 10 from Mitchell Doheny.
GIRLS
■ Lund 41, Indian Springs 26 -- At Lund, Melynda Boren tallied 12 points, and the fourth-seeded Mustangs (12-7) advanced to the semifinals by elminating the fifth-seeded Thunderbirds (13-7).
EmmaLee Erekson added 10 points for Lund, which led 21-13 at halftime.
