Moodie fires 64, leads LPGA event by stroke
Scotland's Janice Moodie shot a bogey-free 8-under-par 64 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over 14-year-old Alexis Thompson in the Navistar LPGA Classic in Prattville, Ala., with Michelle Wie and top-ranked Lorena Ochoa two strokes back.
Moodie, a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour, played her final nine holes -- the front nine on The Senator course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill complex -- in 6-under 30. She birdied her final four holes and six of her last seven.
Thompson had eight birdies and a bogey. She tied for 34th in July at the U.S. Women's Open.
Also: Rookie Leif Olson and Tim Petrovic shot 6-under 66s in rainy and cold conditions to share the first-round lead in the Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y., the first event of the five-tournament Fall Series.
Matt Kuchar, John Senden, and Vaughn Taylor were a stroke back.
The round was stopped because of darkness with a handful of players still on the soggy Atunyote Golf Club course.
Lonnie Nielson shot a 5-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Tom Watson and Jay Haas in the Senior Players Championship in Timonium, Md., the last of the Champions Tour's five major tournaments.
Denmark's Thomas Bjorn shot an 8-under 64 at Kingsbarns to take a two-stroke lead over England's Ross McGowan and Northern Ireland's Gareth Maybin in the Dunhill Links championship at St. Andrews, Scotland.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Oklahoma's Bradford won't start at Miami
Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Sam Bradford will not start for No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday at No. 17 Miami.
Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Landry Jones will start for Bradford, who hasn't played since spraining the AC joint in his right shoulder the first week of the season.
"Sam has made daily progress, but we don't feel like he's quite where he needs to be yet," Stoops said in a statement. "Our team has a lot of confidence in Landry's ability, and we're looking forward to going into the game with him at quarterback."
Also: The NCAA must release documents on Florida State's appeal of an academic cheating penalty because they are public records, a state appellate court ruled.
A three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal upheld a trial judge's decision last month ordering the college athletics organization to make the documents public after blacking out students' names.
That ruling had been on hold pending the appeal court's decision. It was not immediately clear when the documents would be released to The Associated Press and other media that sued the NCAA, Florida State and the university's outside law firm.
Penn State linebacker Sean Lee is likely to miss his second straight game with a knee injury when the No. 15 Nittany Lions travel to Illinois on Saturday.
Lee sprained his left knee in Penn State's Sept. 19 game against Temple and didn't play in last week's loss to Iowa.
The Nittany Lions also will be without freshman wide receiver and kick returner Devon Smith (concussion).

Avs retire ex-captain Sakic's No. 19 sweater
The Colorado Avalanche retired the No. 19 of longtime captain Joe Sakic in a ceremony before their season-opening 5-2 win over San Jose.
The team also raised a banner bearing his name and number to the rafters at the Pepsi Center. Sakic's number becomes just the third retired since the Avalanche relocated to Denver in 1995, joining Patrick Roy (33) and Ray Bourque (77).
Sakic announced his retirement July 9 after a 20-year career. He left the game among the NHL's career scoring leaders, winding up eighth in points (1,641), 11th in assists (1,016) and 14th in goals (625).
Also: Veteran forward Brendan Shanahan left the New Jersey Devils after being told he would not be a part of their top three lines this season.
The 40-year-old Shanahan, who has 656 career goals, said he plans to spend the next few weeks with his family and decide whether he wants to play or retire.
Third-ranked Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Japan Open because of a left wrist injury. The tennis tournament begins Monday in Tokyo.
UNLV sophomore golfer Derek Ernst shared Mountain West Conference men's golfer of the month honors for September with Air Force senior Tom Whitney.
Ernst opened the season with the best finish of his career by tying for first at the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. He then tied for seventh at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., and tied for 12th at the PING/Golfweek Preview in Bremerton, Wash.
The UNLV volleyball team (3-9, 2-3 Mountain West Conference) lost 20-25, 16-25, 23-25 to Utah (10-5, 4-0) at Cox Pavilion.
