Game On Dude gives jockey
Sutherland historic victory

Game On Dude carried Chantal Sutherland to victory in the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, making her the first female jockey to win the 73-year-old race.

They teamed to win by 1½ lengths at Betfair Hollywood Park on Saturday in Inglewood, Calif., after losing the Grade 1 race by a nose last year.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert finished 1-2 for the second straight year, with Game On Dude and second-place Richard's Kid. In 2011, First Dude held off Game On Dude.

Game On Dude ran 1¼ miles on the synthetic Cushion Track in 2 minutes, 4.19 seconds and paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10 as the 1-2 favorite. The 5-year-old gelding is co-owned by former Dodgers and Yankees manager Joe Torre.

Also: Mucho Macho Man won the $350,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park in New York, beating Hymn Book by 2½ lengths.

After sitting second behind the pacesetting Trickmeister, Mucho Macho Man took charge turning for home and was under a hand ride from Mike Smith approaching the finish wire. The time was 1:46.58 for 1 1/8 miles.

The 4-year-old, trained by Kathy Ritvo, has six victories in 16 starts. Mucho Macho Man, third last year in the Kentucky Derby, paid $13.60, $5.40 and $4.10.

Franchitti's pole streak intact
after qualifying first at Toronto

Defending champion Dario Franchitti won the pole for today's IndyCar race at Toronto.

Franchitti won the qualifying session among the fastest six with a time of 59.351 seconds, 0.24 seconds ahead of IndyCar points leader Will Power, who will join him on the front row.

Franchitti has now won three straight poles, but he's looking for a better finish come race day. His engine failed before the start of the race in Iowa two weeks ago. Contact forced him to a 19th-place finish at Milwaukee the previous week.

Justin Wilson, Sebastien Bourdais and Scott Dixon qualified third through fifth. Canadian Alex Tagliani was sixth, but will drop 10 spots as a result of a penalty he incurred for changing engines Friday.

Also: Vincent Nobile became the youngest driver to win the K&N Horsepower Challenge, the special Pro Stock race-within-a-race bonus event at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.

The 21-year-old Nobile drove his Dodge Avenger to a 6.750-second run at 205.94 mph in the final round to hold off Jason Line for the $50,000 prize.

Johnny Gray (Funny Car), Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) raced to the No. 1 qualifying spots for today's elimination rounds.

Formula One points leader Fernando Alonso put Ferrari on the pole for the first time in 31 races after mastering the rain-soaked track in a disrupted qualifying session for the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, England.

The reigning Silverstone champion was 0.047 seconds faster than Red Bull driver Mark Webber.

British cyclist Wiggins claims
overall lead at Tour de France

Bradley Wiggins gave Britain its first Tour de France leader in 12 years, wresting the yellow jersey from Fabian Cancellara after being helped by a powerful escort in the race's mountain debut.

In the Tour's first big shake-up, the Sky squad was dominant up the first summit finish, allowing Christopher Froome to win the seventh stage from Tomblaine to the ski station at La Planche des Belles Filles.

The 198-kilometer trek went a long way toward shaping the three-week race as experts had predicted - a showdown between Wiggins and defending champion Cadel Evans of Ausralia.

Cancellara, the Swiss time-trial specialist, had worn the jersey since winning the prologue a week ago.

Also: The Charlotte Bobcats announced that forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist of Kentucky signed a deal worth about $4 million for his first season, according to the union negotiated rookie pay scale. Kidd-Gilchrist averaged nearly 12 points and more than seven rebounds in his only season with the Wildcats.

The Bobcats chose Kidd-Gilchrist with the second overall pick.
