UNLV women's tennis team
knocks off No. 12 Tennessee

The UNLV women's tennis team, ranked 67th, pulled off the biggest upset in program history with a 4-3 victory over No. 12 Tennessee on Wednesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

UNLV's previous top win came in 2002 against No. 17 William & Mary.

The Volunteers, ranked as high as fifth last month, swept the three doubles matches to take the first point, but UNLV (9-5) rallied to get points in four of six singles matches.

Lucia Batta got the clinching point for UNLV at No. 1, winning the last six games to beat Kata Szekely, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. Aleksandra Josifoska (No. 2) and Nives Pavlovic (No. 3) also notched victories, and an injury forced Tennessee to forfeit the No. 6 singles match.

Also: The UNLV men's golf team moved up two spots to No. 2 in the country in the Golfstat rankings, behind Texas. The Rebels were ranked fifth in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll, which Texas also leads.

In eight tournaments this season, UNLV has five titles and two second-place finishes.

Bishop Gorman High School senior point guard Gio Guzman made an oral commitment to Florida International at the end of his official visit Tuesday.

The 5-foot-10-inch Guzman averaged 7.2 assists as a senior, helping Gorman (28-4) win the Class 4A state title.

"Getting an opportunity to play for (Florida International coach) Isiah Thomas, that's unbelievable," Guzman said. "When he took the time to sit down with me and offer me a scholarship, I couldn't say no."

Three Colorado State football players are recovering from injuries from a fight over the weekend.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports that 20-year-old offensive lineman Tyler Sambrailo suffered a knife injury requiring 14 staples to the back of his shoulder, 21-year-old linebacker Michael Orakpo was cut on the thumb, and 19-year-old defensive lineman Nordly Capi had a small cut on his wrist from the fight.

Police Sgt. Kristy Volesky said the three were involved in a fight with a group of people who were kicked out of a St. Patrick's Day party they attended. One person allegedly kicked out a light on Capi's car as the group left.

No one has been arrested yet.

Muamba improving; doctor
says, 'in effect, he was dead'

Fabrice Muamba's heart stopped beating on its own for 78 minutes and "in effect, he was dead in that time," said the doctor for English Premier League soccer team Bolton.

The 23-year-old midfielder collapsed during an FA Cup match against Tottenham on Saturday after suffering from cardiac arrest. He was taken to London Chest Hospital, where he's improving and talking to doctors after needing 15 shocks from a defibrillator.

Medics tried unsuccessfully to revive Muamba for 48 minutes on Saturday before he arrived at the hospital, Bolton team doctor Jonathan Tobin said. It took another 30 minutes, after 15 shocks from a defibrillator, before the player's heart started beating again on its own.

"They were working on him without his heart having a muscular beat," Tobin said. "In effect, he was dead in that time. ... Throughout the whole resuscitation, period you are worrying.

"You know the longer the resuscitation goes on, the less chance there is of survival, but this is slightly different. This is a very fit 23-year-old."

Also: Manchester City narrowed the gap on leader Manchester United to a single point, scoring twice in the last 13 minutes to beat Chelsea 2-1 and win a Premier League-record 20th straight home game.

Arsenal moved up to a season-high third place with a 1-0 win at Everton, with Tottenham slipping to fourth after a 1-1 draw with Stoke.
