Watson shoots 62, takes lead
at Doral; Woods trails by seven

Bubba Watson and Justin Rose put on an amazing show of birdies in blustery conditions, making 17 between them while playing in the same group Friday at the Cadillac Championship in Doral, Fla.

Their playful duel was decided by Watson's eagle, giving him a 10-under 62 and a one-shot lead.

Watson belted a 3-iron that barely got over a palm tree, carried over the water into the wind and settled 6 feet away on the par-5 eighth for an eagle putt that gave him a one-shot lead over Rose.

Watson was at 12-under 132 and will get to play again in the final group today with Rose, who had to settle for a 64.

Tiger Woods played bogey-free for a 67 and actually lost ground. He moved up the leaderboard, but is seven shots behind going into the weekend, with 14 players ahead of him.

Rory McIlroy, in his first tournament as the world No. 1, managed a 69 and fell 10 shots off the lead.

Also: Matt Jones shot 5-under 67 to open a three-stroke lead over George McNeill in the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open in Rio Grande.

Jones, tied with McNeill for the first-round lead, had a bogey-free round to reach 11-under 133.

Redskins near deal with Rams
to grab No. 2 pick in NFL Draft

The Washington Redskins have a deal in place to acquire the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, and they plan to take Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, multiple sources reported.

Under the deal reported by FoxSports.com and ESPN.com, the Redskins and St. Louis Rams will swap first-round selections this year. The Rams also will receive multiple future first-round draft picks and other selections.

ESPN.com reported St. Louis will receive Washington's first- and second-round picks this year, and the Redskins' first-round picks in 2013 and 2014.

The trade moves the Redskins up four places from sixth in the April draft, leapfrogging any other team that would have an interest in the Heisman Trophy winner. The Indianapolis Colts are expected to take Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick.

Also: Drew Brees said he has never participated in and was never aware of a "real" bounty program, and there would be no place for players being provided incentives to intentionally injure one another in any sport.

In a letter on his foundation's website, the Saints' star quarterback said fans should reserve judgment until more is known about the league's bounty probe.

The New York Jets extended quarterback Mark Sanchez's contract by three years and dropped out of pursuing free agent Peyton Manning.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum said the Jets "looked at" going after Manning before deciding to stick with Sanchez.

Jacobs, 29, ran for 571 yards and seven touchdowns last season as the Giants won the Super Bowl.

The NFL suspended tight end Virgil Green, linebacker D.J. Williams and defensive tackle Ryan McBean of the Denver Broncos for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

McBean and Williams are suspended for Denver's first six games of the 2012 season. Green is suspended for the team's first four games. All three are suspended without pay.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran offensive tackle Guy Whimper to a two-year contract. Whimper, who started 15 games last season, would have become an unrestricted free agent next week.

Giants reach one-year deals
with Posey, Bumgarner

The San Francisco Giants agreed to terms on 2012 contracts with catcher Buster Posey, left-handed starter Madison Bumgarner and 17 others.

The 22-year-old Bumgarner went 13-13 with a 3.21 ERA in 204 2/3 innings last year in his first full season as a starter for San Francisco. He pitched eight shutout innings in Game 4 of the 2010 World Series against Texas as the Giants went on to capture their first championship since moving to San Francisco in 1958.

Also: Juan Nicasio took another big step in his remarkable comeback from a broken neck when he threw three impressive innings in the Colorado Rockies' 6-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics in Scottsdale, Ariz.

It was his first start since Aug. 5, when Washington's Ian Desmond scorched a line drive that struck the stocky right-hander in his right temple, fracturing his skull. The fall broke his neck.

St. Louis' Adam Wainwright, who won 19 and 20 games in the two seasons before having elbow ligament replacement surgery in February 2011, pitched two scoreless innings in his first start in more than a year as the Cardinals beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 in Fort Myers, Fla.
