Green Valley athlete upgraded after surgery
A Green Valley High School football player successfully underwent surgery Sunday to alleviate swelling in his vertebrae caused by an injury suffered Friday.
LaQuan Phillips, 17, was upgraded from serious condition to fair at Sunrise Hospital, hospital spokesperson Ashlee Seymour said.
"From everything that I could gather, it went about as well as could be expected," Green Valley coach Matt Gerber said.
Phillips, a senior defensive back, was injured after an apparent collision with 7:25 remaining in the second quarter of Green Valley's 24-20 home loss to Centennial on Friday.

Men's golf takes second in first tourney of year
The UNLV men's golf team, ranked 22nd, finished second in the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Rebels shot even-par 288 in the final round for a 16-under 848 total, 11 shots behind Colorado State. The Rams' Bryce Hanstad shot 5-under 67 to win the individual title at 11-under 205.
UNLV's Eddie Olson (69) was third at 209, Brett Kanda (72) was eighth at 214, and Ji Moon (75) tied for ninth at 215.
Also: Shannon Hughes' penalty-kick goal lifted the UNLV women's soccer team over Long Beach State 1-0 in Long Beach, Calif.
The Rebels (4-1-1) drew the penalty kick when Haley Partridge was knocked down inside the box in the 77th minute.
Goalkeeper Alicia Lugo (three saves) earned her third shutout of the season.
The UNLV men's soccer team lost to Cal State Northridge 2-0 in Fullerton, Calif.
The Rebels (3-1) were outshot 12-6, including 7-0 in shots on goal.

Rahy's Attorney races to Woodbine Mile win
Canadian-owned Rahy's Attorney won the $1 million Woodbine Mile in Toronto, while favored Kip Deville faded to finish a distant fifth.
With the win, Rahy's Attorney clinched a berth in the Breeders' Cup Mile on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita Park in California.
Kip Deville, North America's top-ranked turf miler, took the early lead, but couldn't hold it coming around the turn. Kip Deville managed to get into second in the stretch, but faded and finished five lengths behind.
Ventura, a filly, finished second, 11/4 lengths behind, and Just Rushing was third.
Rahy's Attorney, ridden by Slade Callaghan, finished in 1 minute, 36.14 seconds and paid $27.30, $8.70 and $9.30. Ventura returned $4.20 and $4.90, and Just Rushing paid $9.90 to show.

May-Treanor, Walsh dealt another loss
Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh lost for the second time since the Beijing Games and missed their first AVP Crocs Tour final since April 2007.
In the biggest upset in women's volleyball this season, No. 3 seeds Jen Boss and April Ross beat the top-seeded team of Walsh and May-Treanor 21-18, 15-21, 20-18 in a semifinal match of the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Boss and Ross then lost in the final to Jenny Johnson Jordan and Annett Davis, 21-16, 24-22.
Also: Boxing Hall of Famer Joey Giardello, a former middleweight champion who sued filmmakers over a depiction of a title bout against Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, has died. He was 78.
Giardello died at a nursing home in Cherry Hill, N.J., on Thursday, the International Boxing Hall of Fame said in a statement. He had been suffering from congestive heart failure and diabetes, Giardello's family told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
American cyclist Levi Leipheimer took the overall lead in the Spanish Vuelta following an eighth stage won by David Moncoutie of France.
Leipheimer finished eighth in the stage, 39 seconds behind Moncoutie, who completed the 94-mile run to Salardu, Spain, in 4 hours, 24 minutes, 58 seconds.
Asafa Powell won the 100-meter dash at the Rieti Grand Prix in 9.82 seconds in Rieti, Italy, failing to reprise his world-record effort at the meet last year.
Powell, who set a then-world record of 9.74 on the same track a year ago, clocked 9.77 in his semifinal heat, but that was still well off the world record of 9.69 set by fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt at the Beijing Olympics last month.
Luis Fabiano scored two goals to lead Brazil to a 3-0 victory over Chile in a World Cup qualifying match in Santiago, Chile.
