UNLV men's golf team nets West Regional bid
The UNLV men's golf team, ranked 17th in the nation, earned a bid in the NCAA West Regional as the sixth seed for the tournament in Bremerton, Wash.
It's the 20th straight regional appearance for UNLV, which won two tournaments this season and has nine straight top-five efforts dating to September.
The top 10 teams from each of three 27-team regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 28-31 in West Lafayette, Ind.
Also: Arizona hired Russ Pennell as an assistant men's basketball coach on Monday.
The former Arizona State assistant coach and radio analyst replaces Kevin O'Neill on coach Lute Olson's staff.
O'Neill left the program after serving as interim coach during Olson's leave of absence last season.
A Georgia Tech pitcher died last month from an accidental drug overdose, but it has not been determined if heroin was involved.
Michael Hutts, a 21-year-old pitcher, was the victim of accidental morphine toxicity.
South Carolina basketball player Devan Downey, who led the team in scoring last season as a sophomore, was charged with simple assault.
University spokesman Russ McKinney said the charge stemmed from an argument Downey had with another student on campus last week.
Forward Ekpe Udoh, who started 31 games for Michigan's basketball team last year, is leaving after two seasons but has yet to decide to which school he will transfer.

Ex-track star remains jailed on heroin charges
A federal judge in Norfolk, Va., postponed a bond hearing for former track star Tim Montgomery on federal heroin distribution charges.
The hearing was originally scheduled for Monday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk. It was rescheduled for today after Montgomery retained an attorney, who requested time to review the case.
The 33-year-old sprinter was arrested Wednesday and accused of dealing more than 100 grams of heroin in Virginia over the past year.
Also: X-rays were negative on rookie IRL driver Jaime Camara's injured back.
The 27-year-old Brazilian was hospitalized after a crash during practice for the Indianapolis 500. He will be examined again today before he can resume practice for the May 25 race.
Indianapolis police are investigating the death of a Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing mechanic as a homicide.
David Evans, 63, died early Sunday after a fight while leaving Kazablanka Bar, which is attached to the hotel where team members were staying during practice for the May 25 Indianapolis 500.
A day after Ronaldo claimed in a TV interview to have worked as an ambassador for UNICEF, the United Nation's children's agency said the Brazilian soccer star has no official link to the organization.
On Sunday, Ronaldo said his encounter with prostitutes last week will "not interfere" with his post as a UNICEF ambassador.
He said he wasn't aware the prostitutes were cross-dressers until he got to a motel and discovered they were men.
