Goggin takes early lead with 65 at Memorial

Mathew Goggin took only nine putts in his final nine holes at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, on Thursday on his way to a 7-under-par 65 and a one-shot lead over Jerry Kelly and two-time Memorial champion Kenny Perry.

Goggin holed out a bunker shot for birdie on the par-3 fourth, then ended his round with a 12-footer for par from off the green, giving him only 22 putts for his round.

Also: Annika Sorenstam's par 72 left her seven shots behind co-leaders Karrie Webb and In-Kyung Kim and tied for 60th after the first round of the Ginn Tribute in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Scott Strange made five straight birdies and shot 8-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead over Edoardo Molinari in the first round of the Wales Open in Newport, Wales.

Michelle Wie shot 4-under 68 in the first round of the Ladies German Open in Munich to share seventh place, four strokes behind leader Nina Reis of Sweden.

Kyle Stanley shot 4-under 68, helping Clemson take a one-stroke lead over UCLA at the halfway point of the NCAA men's Division I championship in West Lafayette, Ind.

Stanley's two-round total of 140 was one stroke behind leader Billy Horschel of Florida.

FIFA lifts international ban on Iraqi team

Soccer's governing body lifted its international ban on Iraq to keep alive its World Cup qualifying hopes.

Iraq was suspended by FIFA on Tuesday after Iraq's government dissolved the national Olympic Committee and all sports federations.

The ban was provisionally lifted after FIFA received a letter from an Iraqi Cabinet official saying the Iraqi soccer federation had been "excluded" from the decree disbanding the Olympic Committee and other sports bodies, FIFA said in a statement.

No. 1 seed Florida upset in NCAA softball event

Holly Tankersley hit a solo home run off NCAA wins leader Stacey Nelson in the eighth inning as Louisiana-Lafayette (52-13) opened the College World Series with a 3-2 upset of top-seeded Florida (67-4) in Oklahoma City.

Also: Three UNR football players were arrested for driving under the influence over the Memorial Day weekend, including starting tight end Mike McCoy.

The two other reserve players arrested, sophomore defensive back Kenny Viser and senior wide receiver Rocco Bene, have been dismissed from the team because they previously had violated team rules, coach Chris Ault said.

McCoy, a senior, will remain with the Wolf Pack because it is his first violation of team rules, Ault said.

UNLV junior first baseman Xavier Scruggs was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America second team.

Scruggs led the Mountain West Conference in batting average (.379), home runs (20) and RBIs (65).

UNLV men's golfer Seung-su Han was named to the PING All-Pacific Region team.

Han, a junior, also was honored as an All-Pacific Region recipient last year.

Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports agreed to two-year contract extension with Dupont that keeps the four-time Cup champion with the only primary sponsor he has had through 2010.

Elliott Sadler and Gillett Evernham Motorsports agreed to a multiyear contract extension that will keep the Sprint Cup driver in the No. 19 Dodge.

Luc Bourdon, a promising rookie defenseman with the Vancouver Canucks, was killed when his motorcycle struck a tractor-trailer in a crash near his hometown of Shippagan, New Brunswick. He was 21.

Sven Davidson, Sweden's first Grand Slam winner and a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has died. He was 79.

The hall said he died Wednesday of pneumonia in Arcadia, Calif.
