Allen leads by two in hometown tourney

Michael Allen matched his career-low round with a 7-under-par 63 to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Fry's Electronics Open on Thursday in Allen's hometown of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Nick Watney, Rich Beem and Frank Lickliter II were two strokes back, with Lickliter posting the day's only bogey-free round, and former UNLV star Ryan Moore was in a group of five at 66. Phil Mickelson shot 71.

Also: Martin Kaymer shot an 11-under-par 61, equaling the lowest round on the European Tour this season, and took a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Portugal Masters at Vilamoura.

Federer avenges losses to Canas with easy win

Top-seeded Roger Federer finally got a victory against Guillermo Canas, beating the 14th-ranked Argentine 6-0, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters in Spain. Canas had beaten Federer in two consecutive tournaments in March.

Also: Three UNLV singles players and three doubles teams advanced in the women's ITA West Regional Championships in San Diego. Elena Gantcheva, Kristina Nedeltcheva and Nikol Dimitrova won their singles matches, and Gantcheva-Nedeltcheva, Katy Williams-Anna Maskaljun and Adrienn Hiduegi-Dimitrova advanced in doubles.

One UNLV singles player and two doubles teams advanced in the men's ITA Mountain Regional Championships at the Darling Tennis Center. Elliot Wronski won his singles match, and Wronski-Wesley Burrows and Luca Barlocchi-David Campbell advanced in doubles.

Former UNLV center Clark arrested in Texas

Former UNLV basketball center Keon Clark, wanted on drug and weapons charges in Illinois, was arrested when U.S. marshals stopped him aboard a commercial bus heading out of Houston.

Clark, who played six years in the NBA, was scheduled for trial in August 2006 in Vermilion County in Illinois for possession of marijuana, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and two counts of firearm possession. The 32-year-old also is facing charges of driving with a suspended license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and DUI.

Also: Sacramento, Calif., authorities are investigating allegations that Kings reserve center Justin Williams sexually assaulted a female acquaintance. The team has given Williams an indefinite leave of absence.

Wisconsin senior guard Michael Flowers will take a temporary leave of absence for medical reasons. He started all 36 games last season, averaged 7.2 points and led the team in assists (105) and steals (58). He was selected to the Big Ten all-defensive team.

Brook Lopez, a 7-foot sophomore who already was academically ineligible for the start of Stanford's basketball season, has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. He averaged 12.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks last season.

The Boulder City BMX Track will host the Lake Mead Nationals today through Sunday. The event includes competition in the National Bicycle League and the Union Cycliste Internationale, which will help determine members of the U.S. team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The UCI race will begin at noon Saturday. The facility is off U.S. 93 on Airport Road in Veterans Memorial Park.

UNLV senior Richard Hortness was named the Mountain West Conference's Swimmer of the Meet. He won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team in the Rebels' upset of Arizona State in the season opener Saturday.

Baylor offensive line coach Eric Schnupp, cited for urinating on the bar at a tavern early Sunday, resigned. The citation is a Class C misdemeanor carrying a $258 fine.
