UNLV men's tennis team
coasts to two victories

The UNLV men's tennis team swept UC Riverside 7-0 and beat Idaho State 6-1 on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

UNLV (8-3) swept the three doubles matches to get the first point against both teams. The Rebels took all six singles matches in straight sets against Riverside and took five of six in singles play against Idaho State.

No. 1 singles player Mehdi Bouras led the way, beating Riverside's Quoc Doan 6-4, 6-4 and Idaho State's Danel Barrenechia, 6-4, 6-2.

Also: The UNLV softball team dropped both its games in the Kick-Off Classic, losing to Washington 17-13 and Illinois-Chicago 4-2 at Eller Media Stadium.

Against Washington, UNLV (2-2) gave up nine runs in the top of the seventh to fall behind 17-5, then came up short after rallying for eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Against Illinois-Chicago, the Flames broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh.

The College of Southern Nevada baseball team swept two games at the JUCO National Classic in Marianna, Fla. The Coyotes (7-3) beat Walters (Tenn.) State 6-5 and Middle Georgia, 3-1.

The CSN softball team split a doubleheader against North Idaho College, winning 7-2 and losing 5-3 in St. George, Utah. The Coyotes moved to 10-12 overall, 3-5 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

Anthony's Cross claims
Robert B. Lewis victory

Anthony's Cross beat Riveting Reason by a nose to win the $250,000 Robert B. Lewis for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. Overwhelming favorite and early Kentucky Derby prospect Tapizar went out hard early, weakened late and finished a distant fifth.

Anthony's Cross and jockey Joel Rosario sat second in the early going, took the lead at the top of the stretch and held off the late charge from Riveting Reason for the victory and a step toward the Derby, covering 1 1/8 miles in 1 minute, 48.63 seconds.

Also: Brethren easily defeated nine rivals in the $225,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar, Fla., posting a four-length win over 31-1 long shot Too Experience in an early steppingstone to the Kentucky Derby.

A half brother to last year's Derby winner, Super Saver, Brethren is now 3-for-3 after covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.07.

Silver Medallion won the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby by 1¼ lengths at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif., in an early prep for the Kentucky Derby. Silver Medallion ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.45.

Redskins returner Banks
stabbed in altercation

Washington Redskins kick returner Brandon Banks and a close friend were stabbed early Saturday during an altercation outside a downtown D.C. nightclub.

Banks received a surface wound to his side that required stitches and was expected to be released today from an area hospital, his agent, James Gould, said in a statement. The player's unidentified friend was critically injured and underwent surgery, Gould said.

The suspect, 24-year-old Jason Shorter of Lanham, Md., was arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill, police said.

Also: Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was formally charged in Reston, Va., with misdemeanor assault stemming from a road rage incident this month.

The encounter that led to the charge occurred Feb. 2. Police said a 38-year-old man told investigators he was assaulted by the driver of a pickup truck who was tailgating him. The driver was identified as Haynesworth.

Titans coach Mike Munchak filled one of the biggest openings on his staff by hiring Jerry Gray away from the University of Texas to become Tennessee's defensive coordinator.

Kim Clijsters will face Petra Kvitova in the final of the Open Gaz de France.

Clijsters, who will be ranked No. 1 on Monday, defeated Kaia Kanepi, 6-1, 7-5. Kvitova cruised past Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States 6-2, 6-0 in the other semifinal.

Fernando Verdasco reached the SAP Open final for the second straight year, beating Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-4 in San Jose, Calif. Verdasco will play Milos Raonic, who advanced after Gael Monfils pulled out with an injured left wrist.

The Seton Hall basketball team dismissed seniors Keon Lawrence and Jamel Jackson. Coach Kevin Willard said the decision was made "due to a violation of team rules and an ongoing pattern of conduct unbecoming of a representative of Seton Hall athletics."

Lawrence averaged 4.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists. Jackson averaged 4.6 points and 1.2 rebounds.

Steve Cunningham successfully defended his IBF cruiserweight title by beating Enad Licina of Serbia by unanimous decision in Muelheim, Germany. The judges scored the fight 118-110, 117-111, 115-113.

Cunningham was making his first defense of the title he won from Canadian Troy Ross in June 2010, when he reclaimed the belt he lost to Poland's Tomasz Adamek in 2008.

On the same card, Yoan Pablo Hernandez knocked out Steve Herelius to claim the interim WBA cruiserweight title.

Canada's Erik Guay won the prestigious downhill skiing title at the world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, ahead of prerace favorites Didier Cuche of Switzerland and Christof Innerhofer of Italy. American Bode Miller finished 15th.

Wayne Rooney used a spectacular bicycle kick with his back to the goal to lift first-place Manchester United to a 2-1 win over rival Manchester City in an English Premier League game.

Rooney called it the best goal he has scored, and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson claimed it was the greatest strike he has seen in 25 years at Old Trafford.
