Alaskan musher sets record
in posting Iditarod victory

John Baker crossed the finish line first Tuesday in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race to reclaim the title for an Alaska native musher.

Baker, 48, of Kotzebue, Alaska, steered his dog team down the main drag in this gold rush town on the state's western coast to win the 1,150-mile race from Anchorage to Nome, getting his name in the record books in the process.

He is the first Alaska native to win the world's longest sled dog race since Jerry Riley in 1976.

Baker also shattered by exactly three hours the race record held by four-time champion Martin Buser, who completed the 2002 race in eight days, 22 hours, 46 minutes. Baker completed the race in eight days, 19 hours, 46 minutes.

Ramey Smyth challenged Baker toward the end of the race. The 35-year-old musher from Willow, Alaska -- who finished sixth last year, one spot behind Baker -- closed the gap to less than one hour but couldn't catch him down the stretch.

Notre Dame cited, fined
in death of video coordinator

Indiana regulators fined Notre Dame $77,500 for six safety violations in the October death of a 20-year-old student who was killed when the hydraulic lift he was on toppled over in high winds while he was filming football practice.

The school failed to maintain safe working conditions or heed National Weather Service warnings on a day wind speeds in the area reached 53 mph, the Indiana Department of Labor said.

"The evidence overwhelmingly demonstrated that the university made a decision to utilize its scissor lifts in known adverse weather conditions," agency commissioner Lori Torres said.

According to a report released by the state of Indiana, Declan Sullivan wasn't happy when he found out the team would be practicing outside on Oct. 27, assistant video coordinator Reuel Joaquin told an Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration investigator.

Sullivan's response was, "Aw, man, this sucks," Joaquin told investigator Jerry Marquell.

Less than an hour earlier, Sullivan had tweeted his concerns about what he described as "terrifying" weather.

"Gusts of wind up to 60 mph today will be fun at work ... I guess I've lived long enough," he wrote.

Also: South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia was suspended for the first week of spring practice for violating team rules. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier wouldn't specify what the senior did but hinted that it happened sometime last year.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said his team is handling discipline internally after linebacker Max Bullough and tight end Brian Linthicum were arrested last week in Colorado.

Bullough was suspected of underage possession of alcohol and Linthicum of assault in the third degree. Authorities said the two tried to flee from officers after a fight at a bar in Aspen, Colo.

A woman was convicted in Waukegan, Ill., of killing the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bears defensive back Shaun Gayle in what prosecutors alleged was a meticulously planned execution of someone she viewed as a rival for Gayle's affection.

The Lake County jury found Marni Yang, 43, guilty of first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child. Yang faces a minimum 45-year prison term when sentenced later this year for the October 2007 shooting of Rhoni Reuter, 42.

The suburban home of Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Antwan Odom was heavily damaged by fire early Tuesday.

Fire officials in the city of Mason, north of Cincinnati, said Odom and his family were out of town at the time.
