Men's golf team ties for third,
reaches NCAA Championships
The UNLV men's golf team finished in a three-way tie for third at the NCAA San Diego Regional at Carlton Oaks Golf Club on Saturday, clinching a spot in the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2006.
The Rebels shot 10-over 298 in the final round to finish with a 22-over 886 total, 16 strokes behind first-place Oregon (6-over 870). Augusta State was second at 16-over 880, followed by UNLV, California and Tennessee. The top five teams in each of six regions advanced to the championships.
Eddie Olson led UNLV, shooting 2-over 74 to tie for third at 1-under 215. Cal State Northridge's Nick Delio took the individual title at 3-under 213.
The Rebels, ranked 12th, will next head to the NCAAs, set for June 1-6 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Also: The UNLV baseball team lost to host San Diego State 6-4 in the regular-season finale.
Trailing 5-2, the Rebels (27-27, 11-13 Mountain West Conference) put up two runs in the seventh inning. Robbie De La Cruz opened with a double and scored on a throwing error after Hunter Beaty singled.
Jarred Frierson then doubled and scored on a Drew Beuerlein sacrifice fly to make it 5-4, but Cory Vaughn hit a solo shot for the Aztecs (28-26, 13-11) in the bottom of the seventh, and San Diego State held on.
UNLV will return to San Diego for the MWC tournament as the fifth seed, facing fourth-seeded Brigham Young at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Inter Milan tops Bayern Munich
in Champions League final
Inter Milan won the European soccer title for the first time in 45 years, beating Bayern Munich 2-0 in Madrid, Spain, on a pair of goals by Diego Milito in the first Champions League final played on a weekend.
Milito scored in the 35th and 70th minutes at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to give Inter its third European title, following back-to-back wins in 1964-65. Inter completed an Italian triple following victories in Serie A and the Italian Cup.
Also: U.S. coach Bob Bradley revealed that captain Carlos Bocanegra underwent hernia surgery before reporting to World Cup training camp.
Bocanegra, a defender for Rennes, was kicked on the left knee March 28 in a match against Le Mans. Because of stomach pains, he didn't play after the May 2 game against Sochaux.
He had sports hernia surgery May 5.

Mavs' Cuban fined $100,000
for discussing James' status
The NBA fined Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban $100,000 for comments made about free-agent-to-be LeBron James that violated the league's anti-tampering rules.
Phoenix Suns president Steve Kerr also was fined $10,000 for comments he made in a radio interview.
Teams are not allowed to talk about another team's players until July 1, when free agency opens.
Also: Floyd Landis emerged at the Tour of California time trial in Los Angeles, hanging out in a sponsor's tent days after accusing Lance Armstrong of doping.
Landis didn't speak to waiting reporters and sat with his back to the course much of the time. He was in the tent of Dr. Brent Kay, his longtime sponsor. Landis won the Tour of California in 2006, but his Bahati Foundation team wasn't invited to ride this year.
Tony Martin of Germany won the seventh stage, a 21-mile individual time trial, in 41 minutes, 41 seconds. Teammate Michael Rogers of Australia finished second, but retained the overall lead by nine seconds heading into today's finale.
Former heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev earned a comfortable unanimous decision over Kali Meehan in a WBA title eliminator in Rostock, Germany.
The victory makes Chagaev the mandatory challenger for David Haye, who has been trying to work out a deal to fight Wladimir Klitschko in a lucrative unification bout.
Maria Sharapova won her 22nd career title, returning from a two-month layoff with a right elbow injury to beat Kristina Barrois 7-5, 6-1 in the Strasbourg International final in Strasbourg, France.
Pavel Datsyuk's late goal gave Russia a 2-1 victory over Germany and put the defending title winners into the world hockey championship final game against the Czech Republic. The Czechs beat Sweden 3-2 in a shootout in Cologne, Germany.
Joseph Harrison shot 72 to take the first-round lead in the Southern Nevada Amateur at Legacy Golf Club. Harrison leads the Scratch Division by one shot over Joe Sawaia, who shot 1-over 73. Burke Cahill (71) leads the Net Division going into the final round.
Pro football Hall of Famer Stan Jones, a standout for the Chicago Bears in the 1950s and '60s and an innovator of weight training in the NFL, died Friday in Broomfield, Colo. He was 78.
