Lady Rebels lose at San Diego State in final minute

San Diego State rallied in the final 28 seconds to defeat the UNLV women’s basketball team 64-63 on Tuesday night in San Diego despite a season-high 25 points from Lady Rebels guard Mia Bell.

With the loss, UNLV (11-18, 8-9 Mountain West) will be the No. 7 seed in next week’s conference tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center and will play San Jose State or New Mexico on Monday.

San Diego State had used a 16-0 run at the end of the first half to take a 35-26 halftime lead. With 10:56 to play, San Diego State led 53-40.

But the Lady Rebels rallied behind Bell, going on a 17-2 run to take a 57-55 lead with 6:22 remaining. UNLV led 61-60 with 55 seconds left, but San Diego State’s Deajanae Scurry scored on a layup with 28 seconds left to put the Aztecs ahead 62-61. Two free throws from Khristina Hunter with five seconds left proved to be the winning margin, as Amie Callaway scored on a putback at the buzzer for UNLV after a missed 3-point try by Bell.

San Diego State enjoyed a wide margin at the foul line, going 21 of 27, while UNLV was 5 of 8.

The Lady Rebels will end the regular season at 5 p.m. Friday against UNR at Cox Pavilion.
