Late homer lifts Beavers past 51s in season finale

Nick Green's two-run homer in the eighth inning powered the Portland Beavers to a 6-5 win over the 51s on Monday in Portland, Ore., in the season finale for both Pacific Coast League teams.
Beavers shortstop Sean Kazmar, a Las Vegas High School and College of Southern Nevada product, paced Portland's 13-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance. He hit an RBI triple in the fifth inning and scored on a single by Josh Barfield.
Kazmar also hit a two-out single in the seventh inning and eventually scored on a passed ball, tying the score at 4.
Las Vegas (66-78) scored all of its runs on three home runs. Mike Jacobs hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning to put the 51s up 2-1, Aaron Mathews' two-run blast in the sixth gave Las Vegas a 4-3 lead, and Chris Lubanski led off the ninth with a solo shot.
Wily Mo Pena homered for the Beavers (59-85), a two-out solo shot in the third inning.
51s starter Brad Mills gave up three runs on nine hits and no walks in six innings. He struck out seven. Jamie Vermilyea (0-1) gave up Green's home run and took the loss.
Luis Perdomo (4-6), the fifth of five Portland pitchers, earned the win.
