Local colleges roundup: UNLV tennis advances in NCAA Tournament

All three of UNLV’s top singles players earned victories as the 57th-ranked Lady Rebel tennis team upset No. 27 Tulsa 4-3 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Tulsa earned the doubles point, but UNLV took four of six singles matches to earn the victory, with No. 38-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska closing out the match with a 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-4 victory over No. 18 Samantha Vickers.

UNLV, which has now won nine of its last 10 matches, advances to play host and No. 16 Nebraska at noon today.

■ UNLV BASEBALL — Left fielder Joey Swanner went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs to lead UNLV to a 12-2 series-opening win at UNR.

Joey White went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Erick Fedde improved to 6-2 on the season, going 8 1/3 innings and allowing just six hits and two runs for UNLV (32-17, 14-11 Mountain West).

UNR (24-25, 11-14) hosts the second game of the three-game set at 1 p.m. today.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — UNLV lost for the second straight day at San Diego State, dropping a 7-0 decision to the Aztecs.

Francesca Foti allowed all seven runs, but only one was earned, as the Rebels committed five errors behind her. Alyssa Cordova had two of of the five hits for UNLV (21-30, 7-10 Mountain West).

San Diego State (34-18, 12-5) hosts the regular-season finale for both teams at 1 p.m. today.

■ UNLV TRACK — UNLV junior MyShauna Alexander captured the javelin title on the third day of the Mountain West outdoor track championships with a throw of 151 feet, 10 inches, at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field.

Alexander is the fourth Rebel to win a conference javelin title, but the first since Mountain West competition began in 2000.

The meet concludes today with 20 track and eight field event finals, beginning at 8 a.m.

■ UNLV GOLF — The UNLV women’s golf team carded a 12-over 296 on the second day of the NCAA Regional at Stanford, Calif., to move up from 22nd to 16th place out of 24 teams.

The Rebels’ team score of 606 after two days is well off the pace of Purdue (577), Vanderbilt (578) and Southern California (579).

Dana Finkelstein is tied for 24th individually after an even-par 71 kept her at 4-over for the tournament.Demi Mak is one shot back and tied for 31st.

USC’s Annie Park carded an even-par 71 to maintain the individual lead at 4-under 138.

■ CSN BASEBALL — Chevas Numata singled in Isaac Shim with one out in the 10th inning to lift the College of Southern Nevada to a 7-6 victory over College of Southern Idaho in the Region 18 baseball tournament at Morse Stadium.

Top-seeded CSN (40-16) advances to play No. 2 Western Nevada (40-18) in today’s championship game at noon. The Coyotes must win twice to win the tournament, with the second game starting at 3:30 p.m. if necessary.

CSN had lost 10-0 to Western Nevada earlier on Friday to fall into the losers’ bracket.
