Local golfers Ernst, McInerney fall in U.S. Amateur

Local golfers Derek Ernst and A.J. McInerney bowed out of the U.S. Amateur on Wednesday in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., while stroke-play winner Bobby Wyatt was among those advancing after the first round of match play in the 64-player field.

Ernst, a former UNLV standout from Clovis, Calif., tied for 25th in stroke play Monday and Tuesday, but lost to Malaysia's Gavin Green 3 and 1 to open match play.

McInerney, an incoming freshman at UNLV and a former Coronado standout with two state titles, was part of a 17-player playoff for the final 14 match-play spots. He was eliminated after the third playoff hole.

The top-seeded Wyatt, a junior at Alabama, beat Taylor Hancock of Clearwater, Fla., 4 and 2.
