Burgos, 24, sees bumpy road to SNORE success
As far as Brittany Burgos knows, she not only is the only female head of a national racing organization but also the youngest.
But Burgos, 24, is old enough to know the Southern Nevada Off Road Enthusiasts has plenty of work to catch up to other organizations. SNORE is an all-volunteer operation, and Burgos said the 42-year-old organization will need paid professionals to fulfill its potential.
"It's something SNORE is going to have to do to eventually survive," said Burgos, the first-year president and 2006 graduate of Centennial High School.
She said being a volunteer operation naturally means many people can't give their complete effort because they have full-time jobs that demand more attention. Burgos is in a similar situation, running a social media management business. But this isn't so much about improving her bottom line as SNORE's.
But, she said, the issues go beyond simply hiring a full-time staff.
"It's going to take awhile (to progress) because so many people don't know what it takes to put on a race," Burgos said. "They think you show up on race day and that's it. Until they understand how much goes into a race, they think it's easy to put on a race.
"I'm not too optimistic because we've worked with those people a long time. I love them to death, but we won't move forward until they're willing to look outside the box."
Despite her frustrations, Burgos said she plans to run for re-election as president at the end of the year. She's been part of SNORE since she was 15, and her commitment to the organization is evident on race day when she even helps competitors get lined up for the start.
"I love this organization so much," Burgos said, "and I've put so much heart and soul into it."
■ UPCOMING EVENT - NHRA recently announced the JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals will be at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway from Oct. 12 to 14.
The sportsman event was moved to Las Vegas after Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., was forced to close because of noise issues. The Las Vegas stop is the final event on the three-race calendar.
