IMCA Modifieds racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

More than 230 IMCA Modifieds will compete in the Duel in the Desert at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend.

The 14th  annual event is expected to attract teams from 23 states and three Canadian provinces to the half-mile dirt oval, creating the biggest event west of the Rocky Mountains for the 800-horsepower, open-wheel roadsters.

The winner of the 40-lap Modifieds feature Saturday night will get $7,777.

Reigning champ Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., is joined in the field by former winners Johnny Saathoff of Beatrice, Neb., (2004, 2009) and David Murray Jr. of Oberlin, Kan. (2008).

Among Southern Nevadans entered: Dan Fitzgerald, Ryan Cotrell and Joe Kent of Las Vegas; Martin McLaughlin of Henderson; and Jerry Buesig Jr., Gary Costa, Tony Kincade Jr., Jason Pike and Jon Jensen of Pahrump.

Qualifying and practice will begin at 4:30 p.m. today.

■ DRAG RACING -- Justin Lamb of Henderson won the NHRA Division 7 Competition Eliminator season championship last weekend at the LVMS dragstrip. Lamb, who lost in the third round Sunday, had two wins in three division finals to claim his second division title.

Lamb will compete in Competition and Super Gas categories this weekend in the NHRA Finals at Pomona, Calif.
