LVMS to be busy this weekend with stock cars, dragsters and off-road racing

Dustin Ash will face his toughest competition of the season Saturday when he tries to extend his five-race Super Late Models winning streak at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring.

Ash, 22, won the last five Super Late Models races of the regular season en route to claiming his second Super Late Models track and state championships in the past four years. But Saturday's 200-lap feature in the Las Vegas Open Comp event will include top racers from Nevada and California in a field that could include more than 30 teams.

The Open Comp also includes racing for Late Models (100 laps), Modifieds (75), Ford Focus Midgets (35) and Legends (35) on Saturday night. Bombers and Chargers each compete in 50-lap races at 8 tonight.

The event's reigning Super Late Models champion, Justin Johnson, will not compete, as he and Vision Aviation Racing teammate Dusty Davis are preparing for the K&N Pro Series stock car race next weekend at Phoenix International Raceway.

Faith Lutheran High sophomore Dylan Kwasniewski, 15, will compete in Super Late Models, Late Models and Modifieds.

■ NHRA SPORTSMAN -- More than 750 race teams are expected to begin racing today in the Short Line Markets Gambler Shootout at the LVMS drag strip in the last event of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season.

Championship eliminations are on Sunday.

NHRA categories in the event include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Super Street, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Dragster, Comp and Top Sportsman. An added feature will be Top Fuel Harley motorcycles.

■ OFF ROAD -- Larry Job of Las Vegas hopes the home track will be an advantage in Pro Buggy Unlimiteds when the Lucas Oil Off Road Series races Saturday and Sunday on the off-road stadium course at the speedway. Job holds a 10-point lead over Doug Fortin of Alpine, Calif., and Cameron Steele of San Clemente, Calif.

Southern Nevadans are atop Pro 2 Unlimiteds, with points leader Rob MacCachren 61 points ahead of Bryce Menzies with three races remaining.
