NASCAR does ‘victory lap’

nascar does 'victory lap'

The Strip will serve as the not-so-oval oval for NASCAR's top 12 drivers this afternoon during a "victory lap" to celebrate the Cup Series' awards ceremony that will feature champion Jimmie Johnson.

The half-hour ceremony is expected to cause brief delays along the Strip and Harmon Avenue. Las Vegas police will have "moving closures" along the route, none of which is expected to last longer than 15 minutes.

The drivers, who will guide their respective race cars along Las Vegas Boulevard starting at 3:30 p.m., are required to make brief pit stops in front of either Bally's or Bellagio.

A temporary stage will be erected in front of Planet Hollywood, where drivers will start their trek. They will head north on the Strip to Spring Mountain Road, where they will do some burn-outs on their U-turn to head south. The drivers then will head south to Harmon Avenue, where they will turn east toward the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel. Expect some burn-outs on the Harmon turn too.

Five-time Sprint Cup champion Johnson will lead the convoy.
