Youngsters in fast lane at Bullring

It was fitting that two high school students battled at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring on Saturday during a night that saluted the end to the school year.

Dylan Kwasniewski, 15, and Jeremiah Wagner, 17, raced to the wire to finish second and third, respectively, behind Joey Licata of Lake Balboa, Calif., in the regional ASA Speed Truck Series feature.

Kwasniewski, who will be a Faith Lutheran sophomore, and Wagner, a senior-to-be at Northwest Career and Technical Academy, raced side by side the final three laps of the 75-lap race. Branden Underwood, a 17-year-old student at Coronado, placed fifth.

"It was really tight at the end. Jeremiah put on a good race," said Kwasniewski, who has won two truck races this year for the United Nissan Racing team operated by Lee Keach.

"I got a little squirrelly there at the end and got into (Wagner) a little," he said.

The older generation took command of the night's other major races in which track champions Scott Gafforini and Phil Goodwin dominated. Gafforini won his second straight Super Late Models race, and Goodwin won for the third time in the Chargers division of the NASCAR All-American Series.

In other races, Robert D'Ambra gained his second Legends feature victory of the year, Brecken Snow won his second consecutive Thunder Cars race, and Wade Pearson won his third straight Bombers feature.

■ NHRA -- At Joliet, Ill., Larry Dixon beat defending Top Fuel series champion Tony Schumacher in the rain-delayed Route 66 NHRA Nationals.

Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) won their divisions in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Dixon drove his dragster to a 3.823-second run at 323.12 mph to edge Schumacher for his fifth win of the season and 53rd of his career. It also was the sixth time this season that Dixon and Schumacher have met during eliminations.

With his final-round appearance, Schumacher was able to climb from third to second in the season standings, just behind first-place Dixon.

In Funny Car, Hagan stopped runner-up finisher Robert Hight's three-race winning streak and set the national record for time.

Hagan drove his Dodge Charger R/T to a 4.035-second run at 312.78 mph, just enough to back up his semifinal time of 4.022 seconds to set the national record and pick up 20 extra points in the process. It was Hagan's second career win.

In Pro Stock, Edwards continued his dominance over the class and followed up his win in Topeka, Kan., with his sixth victory of the season.

In the Jegs Allstars, Jon Irving of Boulder City lost in the first round of Stock Eliminator. The team representing the northeast's NHRA Division 1 won the team title.

■ OFF-ROAD -- At Ensenada, Mexico, Andy McMillin and his father, Scott, of San Diego, split driving their Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck and won the overall title in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 on Saturday night. B.J. Baldwin of Las Vegas placed third in Trophy-Truck.
