Nevada fishing report
March 30, 2016 - 8:59 pm
■ LAKE MEAD — High winds have kept fishermen at bay. The rest of the week is looking warm again. Fishing for bass has been good on warm days. Shad remain tough to come by, and stripers haven’t been biting on much else. Water temperatures remain fairly cold, so black bass spawning season still isn’t completely underway.
■ LAKE MOHAVE — Striped bass fishing is picking up when the weather cooperates. Some river fishermen have weighed in stripers pushing 4-5 pounds. Try the coves with good brush cover. Some can be reached only by boat, but others can be reached by car. The Lake Mead National Recreation map shows roads that will lead to shore-fishing opportunities.
■ LAUGHLIN — Rainbow trout have been the target fish while temperatures remain on the cool side. Fishing has been good below the dam at Davis Camp and around the casino area, on both sides of the river. Spinners and chartreuse PowerBait have been the favorite lures. Farther down the river at Rotary Park, some have found luck with night crawlers and hardware.
■ LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — Rainbow trout continue to hit on a variety of things, such as rainbow colored PowerBait, yellow or orange Power Eggs, and small spinning lures. Bluegill and bass are starting to become active. The Nevada Department of Wildlife encourages anglers to practice catch-and-release fishing during the spawn to facilitate reproduction in these waters.
■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Despite recent snowfall, the reservoirs remain free of ice, and trout are taking almost anything thrown at them. Cold Springs Reservoir received approximately 7,500 rainbow trout last week. The NDOW suggests using caution when driving around the area due to the muddy conditions.
■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — The reservoir received more than 14,000 rainbows last week, making for great fishing conditions. Anglers are doing well using a variety of baits and lures, but the most productive have been Mepp’s gold and silver spinners with red dots. Bait anglers have been doing well using night crawlers.
■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Fishing activity has picked up, and rainbow trout are taking a variety of baits. Night crawlers and Mepp’s spinners have been the bait and lure of choice. All campground facilities are open.
