New York Rangers McDonagh played through games with broken foot

NEW YORK — New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh played with a broken foot during Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals on Friday night, which was won 2-0 by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

According to Rangers coach Alain Vigneault, McDonagh was playing with the injury “for a couple of games.”

McDonagh took part in pregame warmups but spent most of the first period in the locker room with trainer Jim Ramsay. The captain’s first shift occurred with about seven minutes remaining in the first period. McDonagh took a total of three shifts during the first 20 minutes.

“Mac has been playing on a broken foot, and we sort of got caught there after warm-up,” Vigneault said. “The freezing hadn’t kicked in, so we weren’t sure if he was going to be able to play.

McDonagh played 17:33 total and was on the ice when Lightning left winger Ondrej Palat scored with 8:43 remaining in the third period to make it 2-0.

“He played through a lot of pain,” Vigneault said.
