No. 1 Alabama loses No. 2 rusher for season

Alabama junior running back Jalston Fowler is likely to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Coach Nick Saban said Monday that Fowler will undergo surgery on his left knee "and is most likely going to be out for the season." He didn't elaborate on the nature of the injury.

"Jalston's been a great player in the program, a great special teams guy, a great backup player for us and a really good attitude guy," Saban said. "I know he feels badly and we feel badly, too, for him, that he can't be a part and continue to contribute to our team this year."

Fowler, who was injured during the Western Kentucky game on Saturday, is second on the top-ranked Crimson Tide with 85 yards on 11 carries.

The 245-pounder also serves as a lead blocker in the I-formation and is on the punt- and kick-return teams.

Saban expects noseguard Jesse Williams and cornerback Dee Milliner back for Saturday's game at Arkansas. Both practiced Monday. Milliner missed the Western Kentucky game with a strained hip flexor. Williams sustained a concussion in a collision in practice last week. Saban said he passed the concussion test but was held out as a precaution.

■ UTAH - Senior quarterback Jordan Wynn ended his Utes career after suffering yet another shoulder injury in Friday's overtime loss at Utah State

"Enough is enough," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said, adding that Wynn likely will need a fourth shoulder operation. "He's going to move on with life after football. He's fought the good fight."

Wynn was injured late in the second quarter after being hit while dropping back to throw. He was helped off the field, holding his left, non-throwing arm against his chest. He finished 6 of 11 for 47 yards, with three sacks.

As a freshman, Wynn had a record-setting season that culminated with Most Valuable Player honors in the Poinsettia Bowl. He ended his career as one of 11 quarterbacks in school history to throw for 4,000 yards (4,637 yards, eighth all-time), with 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions and a 14-7 overall record.

■ WYOMING - Coach Dave Christensen said quarterback Brett Smith, the Mountain West Conference freshman of the year last season, is being evaluated on a day-to-day basis on whether he can play this weekend.

Smith was carted off the field with an undisclosed injury in the fourth quarter during a 34-31 loss to Toledo at Laramie. Wyoming hosts Cal Poly on Saturday.

■ FLORIDA - Senior Mike Gillislee, who has 231 yards rushing in two games and four of the team's five touchdowns, has a groin injury that could hinder preparation for the No. 18 Gators' game Saturday at No. 23 Tennessee.

Gillislee injured his groin in the first half against Texas A&M and seemed to aggravate it on a 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Coach Will Muschamp said Gillislee "should be fine," but the coach has a tendency to downplay injuries during the season.

Florida will be without linebacker Jelani Jenkins (thumb surgery) and cornerback Cody Riggs (broken foot).

■ TENNESSEE - Derrick Brodus completed the improbable journey from his couch to the Vols' starting lineup. He will take over for slumping Michael Palardy as the 23rd-ranked Volunteers' main kicker Saturday in their Southeastern Conference opener with No. 18 Florida.

Palardy, who has missed an extra-point attempt in each of Tennessee's first two games, will continue to handle kickoffs.

■ ARKANSAS - Coach John L. Smith said quarterback Tyler Wilson still has symptoms from a head injury suffered in Saturday's upset loss to Louisiana-Monroe, and his status is uncertain for this week's game against No. 1 Alabama.

Smith said Wilson was still experiencing "grogginess" and won't return to the field until cleared by doctors.

■ TULANE - Athletic director Rick Dodson said it's too early to know the long-term effects of the spinal injury senior safety Devon Walker suffered against Tulsa. Dodson said Walker is under constant care in a Tulsa hospital and the player is alert and responsive.

Walker remains in stable condition in intensive care after undergoing surgery Sunday. He was injured in a head-to-head collision during Saturday's game.

■ NEBRASKA - Coach Bo Pelini said running back Rex Burkhead's status for this week's game against Arkansas State remains uncertain. Burkhead missed Saturday's loss at UCLA because of a left knee ligament sprain sustained in the opener against Southern Mississippi.

■ WISCONSIN - Coach Bret Bielema confirmed offensive line coach Mike Markuson was fired following Wisconsin's 10-7 loss Saturday at Oregon State. Markuson will be replaced by Bart Miller, a graduate assistant in his second season with the Badgers.
