GRANEY winS FIFTH SPORTS WRITER OF YEAR

Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Ed Graney has been named the Nevada State Sportswriter of the Year for a fifth time, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association announced last week.

Graney has worked at the Review-Journal since May 2006. Before that, he spent 20 years at the San Diego Union-Tribune as a sports writer and columnist. This is his fifth NSSA honor in the past six years.

A native of Laguna Beach, Calif., Graney is a past winner of Top 10 recognition for sports columns by The Associated Press Sports Editors.

He has covered the past two Summer Olympics for the Review-Journal in Beijing and London, and last summer chronicled the run of Mountain Ridge as the first team in state history to advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. He also has covered the past 17 Final Fours of the NCAA basketball tournament and serves as vice president of the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Graney can be heard from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday on “Gridlock,” ESPN 1100 and 100.9 FM.

Chris Maathuis of KLAS-TV was named Nevada Sportscaster of the Year.

Hal McCoy (Dayton Daily News, Fox Sports Ohio) and Lesley Visser (Boston Globe, HBO, ABC, ESPN, CBS, CBSSports.com) were named as Hall of Fame sports writers, and Bill Raftery (Big East Network, ESPN, CBS, FOX Sports) and the late Dick Schaap (The Sports Reporters, ESPN) were named as Hall of Fame sportscasters.

The NSSA’s annual awards program and Hall of Fame induction ceremony is June 8 in Salisbury, N.C.
