Record series lifts Cougars
April Urban took one look at the scoreboard above her lane at The Orleans on Friday and broke into tears.
The Coronado High School senior achieved a bowler's dream -- rolling an 800 series.
Urban collected 30 of a possible 36 strikes en route to a state-record 808 series in leading the Cougars to a three-game sweep of the state championship match against Clark and a third straight state bowling title.
"I can't believe I did it. I'm so happy," Urban said through tears.
Silverado swept Durango in the boys title match for its first title since 2001.
Urban opened eyes with a 245 in her first game and followed it with eight straight strikes to open the second game.
A stubborn 10-pin in the ninth frame broke a string of 14 consecutive strikes for Urban, who rolled a 275 in the middle game and capped the day with 10 straight strikes in a 288 third game.
"She's been doing it for the last two years," said Coronado coach Bob McKee, whose team didn't lose a game in the playoffs. "She's just a consummate bowler."
Urban knocked down eight pins on her final ball and thought she missed out on the 800 series.
Her previous high was a 728.
"I had no idea," Urban said. "Everybody was staring at me as if I'd just done something. They told me I had it."
Chaparral's Devin DeGrief held the state record, rolling a 729 series in 2004.
Alex Katz added a 598 series, including a 211 game, for Coronado.
Amber Gaskill paced Clark with a 219 game in a 516 series.
In the boys final, senior Jordan Ferrer led the Skyhawks with a 661 series that included games of 243 and 232.
"It came down to who wanted it more," Ferrer said. "We wanted it more, and it just clicked."
Chris Howe added a 247, and Brian Estell rolled a 246 in the second game for Silverado.
Matt McHann led Durango with a 626 series that included games of 224 and 208. Andrew Lewis rolled a 245 game for the Trailblazers.
