Soccer player hospitalized after being stabbed by fan in Spain

MALAGA, Spain — A regional division Spanish football club says one of its players has been hospitalized after being stabbed by a spectator following a match.

Spokesman Salvador Ferrer of football club Alhaurín de la Torre tells The Associated Press that the attack occurred after Sunday’s match between the club’s B-team playing away at rival El Palo.

Ferrer says the player — whose name was not released — was stabbed on the pitch after the end of the game won by El Palo.

A spokesperson for Malaga’s Hospital Regional in southern Spain tells the AP that the 24-year-old victim is in “serious but stable condition” after being treated for two stab wounds to his chest.

Ferrer says the police are investigating.
