Super Bowl party does fans no favors
January 22, 2011 - 12:00 am
The Dallas Cowboys won't be playing in Super Bowl XLV on Feb. 6, but that probably won't stop a record crowd from attending the game at Jerry Jones' personal playpen in Arlington, Texas.
If a record is set, however, it should carry an asterisk.
The first Super Bowl in North Texas is selling $200 tickets to a party plaza at the east end of Cowboys Stadium, but that fee won't include a game ticket. Nevertheless, the NFL said this week those tickets will count toward the official attendance.
Each Cowboys season-ticket holder is allowed to purchase up to four tickets to not see the game in person.
The stadium will seat more than 93,000 for the game. The Super Bowl attendance record of 103,985 was set in 1980 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
■ POTUS PICK -- Security for the Super Bowl is a big enough headache, but it could become a migraine if the Chicago Bears beat Green Bay on Sunday.
President and Chicago native Barack Obama said this week he has plans for Super Bowl Sunday.
"Oh, if the Bears are in the Super Bowl, we're going," he said.
Obama predicts his Bears will beat the rival Packers 20-17 in Sunday's NFC Championship Game.
He apparently does not plan on carrying Wisconsin in the 2012 election.
■ PUNT, PASS, PORN -- Don't get too excited that National Porn Sunday will be on the day of the Super Bowl.
It is an anti-porn rally.
Event organizer Craig Gross says, "It is estimated that 95 million will watch the Super Bowl, but research shows that 40 million Americans visit porn sites every day. The porn revenue is larger than the revenues of the professional football, baseball or basketball leagues in this country."
The focus of Porn Sunday is to get church officials to talk to their congregations about pornography and sexual addictions. A 35-minute video featuring stories about the dangers of porn is narrated by current or former NFL quarterbacks Matt Hasselbeck, Jon Kitna and Josh McCown.
And here you thought the event was to promote the women of the Lingerie Football League gracing the cover and inside pages of Playboy's February issue.
Las Vegas' Epic Church, 8755 W. Warm Springs Road, No. 105, is scheduled to participate in National Porn Sunday, according to the event's website, xxxchurch.com.
■ BUNNY PARTY -- If the anti-porn movement isn't your idea of a good time, you can party with Playboy bunnies for $1,250 in Dallas at a Super Bowl party two days before the game -- provided you can get one of 600 tickets being offered to the public.
CNBC.com reports the 11th annual Playboy Super Bowl party will be Feb. 4 at Aloft Hotel, which will be renamed the Bud Light Hotel for the week.
"Playboy told us they're going back to the glory years and are promising that this will be a tremendous party," an official for the company selling the tickets said.
Sounds like another topic for discussion on National Porn Sunday.
