Theismann compares Redskins’ name-change debate to Caitlyn Jenner
Is it possible that Joe Theismann is still in shock from the gruesome broken leg he suffered 30 years ago at the hands of Lawrence Taylor on “Monday Night Football?”
That’s the only logical way we can explain the former Washington Redskins quarterback’s train wreck of an interview Thursday on a Fox News segment called “Outnumbered” in which Theismann discussed Washington’s team name.
The highlight of the interview came when Theismann actually compared the Redskins’ possible name change to Caitlyn Jenner’s name change.
When asked for his thoughts on a hypothetical situation in which the NFL goes back and edits his Hall of Fame plaque with a new Washington team nickname, Theismann said, “It brings up interesting debate. Bruce Jenner versus Caitlyn Jenner. Bruce Jenner, they want to maybe change the medals from Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn Jenner because that is who he is now, or she is now. So I think you will always be — there will be a time in history where whatever you were you are. Whatever you will be going forward that is what you will become.”
Glad we cleared that up.
Theismann also spoke about his Native American pride, despite the fact he isn’t Native American.
“I was and always will be a Washington Redskin. I’m very proud to have worn the uniform,” he said. “I’m very proud to have represented the Native-American nations of (this) country, the Washington Redskin fans, the team itself.”
Theismann added that, based on his own personal surveys, most Native Americans have no problem with Washington’s nickname.
“I have spoken, and this is my personal experience, I have tried to do my own survey and talk to different Native Americans in different parts of the country and everyone that I talk to, ‘Are you okay with the name?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Are you okay with the name?’ ‘Yes.’” he said. “You have activists out there don’t want to use the name.
“The Redskin name to me has always represented something special and something sacred and something honorable.”
