UNLV tennis teams bound for regionals

The UNLV women's tennis team, ranked 46th, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA regional in Berkeley, Calif.

The Rebels will face No. 18 Arizona State on May 11 to open the four-team regional. The winner will face either 10th-ranked California or No. 74 Southeastern Louisiana.

Champions of each regional advance to the round of 16 May 18-22 in Athens, Ga.

The 66th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team, which advanced to regionals by winning the Mountain West Conference title last weekend, learned it will open against No. 9 UCLA in Los Angeles, also on May 11. The winner of that match will meet either No. 24 Virginia Commonwealth or No. 36 Texas Tech.

The men's round of 16 is also in Athens, Ga.

• CCSN -- The Community College of Southern Nevada baseball team took all the major awards in voting for the All-Region 18 team.

Pitcher Tyler Lavigne (8-2, 0.61 ERA) was named player and pitcher of the year, infielder Easton Gust was named defensive player of the year, and Tim Chambers was named coach of the year.

Infielder Bryce Massanari and designated hitter Chase Leavitt joined Lavigne on the first team, and Gust, outfielder Jeff Gonzales and catcher Braeden Schlehuber made the second team.

The Coyotes (39-16) won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title and opens play in the regional tournament Thursday at Morse Stadium.

• ARIZONA -- Men's basketball coach Lute Olson hired Kevin O'Neill to replace Jim Rosborough, the longtime aide who has rejected an offer to move elsewhere in the athletic department.

The staff shake-up comes after one of the more disappointing seasons in Olson's 24-year tenure with the Wildcats. Arizona won 12 of its first 13 games and climbed to a No. 7 ranking before collapsing in Pacific-10 play. The Wildcats lost to Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Many of Arizona's problems stemmed from poor defense. O'Neill stressed defense as the head coach at Marquette, Tennessee and Northwestern.

• ARIZONA STATE -- The father of women's basketball player Aubree Johnson died in a motorcycle accident in Mexico.

Tom Johnson was killed and his wife, Cyndie, was injured when their motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck in Tecate, Mexico, on Sunday, the school said.

It was the second devastating loss in five months for Johnson, a senior and key player on the Arizona State team that went 31-5 and advanced to the NCAA regional finals for the first time in school history.

Her brother Jordan, 15, died in his sleep of heart failure in November while the family was in the U.S. Virgin Islands to watch Arizona State play in a tournament.
