Armstrong homers twice, leads UNLV baseball to rout of UC Riverside

Patrick Armstrong went 4-for-4 with a pair of two-run home runs and finished only a triple shy of hitting for the cycle to lead the UNLV baseball team to a 20-6 rout of UC Riverside at Wilson Stadium on Tuesday.

Matt McCallister hit a grand slam and finished with six RBIs for UNLV (28-16), while Brandon Bayardi added a three-run shot. The Rebels have outscored the Highlanders (18-22) by a 44-17 margin in two meetings this season.

John Richy allowed four earned runs and struck out five over seven innings to earn the win for UNLV. Justin Jones added four hits and five RBIs for the Rebels.

■ SOFTBALL — Outfielder Pauline Monreal was named Mountain West player of the week for the second time in her career. The native Californian drove in seven runs on three doubles and a home run to help lead the Rebels to a 2-1 record against UNR last week.

Monreal also earned the honor the week of March 1, 2011, as a freshman.

■ WOMEN’S TENNIS — The Rebels drew a first-round matchup with No. 24 Tulsa in the NCAA tournament bracket, released Tuesday. The 65th-ranked Lady Rebels open tournament play on May 10 in Lincoln, Neb.

The winner of the match will take on either unranked Wichita State or No. 15 Nebraska, the regional host.

It marks the sixth time in seven years UNLV has made the field.
