UNLV baseball limited to three hits in 3-1 road loss

Kyle Danford had three run-scoring singles to carry Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 3-1 victory over UNLV on Friday in the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Corpus Christi, Texas.

The Rebels (2-3) were held to three singles by the Islanders (5-1). UNLV tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning on Scott Tomassetti's RBI groundout.

Danford delivered his second RBI single in the bottom of the inning and had another in the eighth. He also singled in a run in the first inning.

For UNLV, Mark Shannon had two singles and Brandon Bayardi one. Joe Robinson (0-1) took the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits in six innings, with three strikeouts and four walks.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL -- At Santa Barbara, Calif., Amanda Oliveto's pitching and Paige Emerson's hitting carried the Rebels (6-5) to one-run wins over rival UNR, 1-0, and San Diego, 2-1 in nine innings, at UC Santa Barbara's Gaucho Classic.

Oliveto (4-3) won both games, striking out 10 in 9 1/3 scoreless innings. She pitched a three-hitter against UNR (3-8) and got the final seven outs against San Diego (3-4), which UNLV defeated on Stefany Valentino's sacrifice fly to center.

Emerson was 5-for-7 with a triple. She had four hits against UNR and scored in the first inning on Tayler Van Acker's hit.

■ UNLV WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING -- At Oklahoma City, the Rebels remained in third place at the Mountain West Conference Championships, which conclude today.

UNLV was second in three events, with the quartet of Rachel Dixon, Hilary Ego, Brittany Ozar and Friderika Szel finishing the 200 freestyle relay in a school-record time of 1:31.64.

Other runners-up were Carmen Robb, who swam the 100 butterfly in 54.16 seconds, and Jessica Heim, who completed the 200 freestyle in 1:47.98.

■ UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS -- The 36th-ranked Lady Rebels suffered their first defeat in six home matches this season, losing to No. 39 Utah 4-3 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

UNLV (5-3) lost four of six singles matches. Sophomore Lucia Batta, No. 50 in the nation in singles, beat Sarah Pham, 6-4, 7-6, to improve to 8-0 in dual matches and 18-6 overall.

■ UNLV MEN'S TENNIS -- At San Luis Obispo, Calif., the 63rd-ranked Rebels (3-7) were handed their fifth straight defeat, 7-0 by No. 53 Cal Poly.

■ UNLV TRACK -- At Albuquerque, N.M., the Rebels were sixth after the first full day of the MWC Indoor Championships. UNLV got runner-up finishes by Amanda Bingson in the weight throw and Ashley Henry in the high jump, as well as its distance medley relay team.

■ CSN SOFTBALL -- At Salt Lake City, the Coyotes were swept by Salt Lake Community College, 8-2 and 8-0, in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader. CSN is 8-14, 3-7.
