BYU’s Last-second Shot Foils Lady Rebels’ Rally

The UNLV women’s basketball team rallied from an 18-point deficit but came up short in the final seconds of a 53-52 loss to Brigham Young on Saturday at Provo, Utah.

Cassie King’s putback with 1.7 seconds to play clinched the victory for BYU. Erica Helms’ desperation shot for UNLV from beyond midcourt bounced off the rim.

BYU went on a 22-0 first-half run and led 27-9 before the Lady Rebels (10-16, 3-10 Mountain West Conference) began chipping away, pulling to within 27-16 at halftime.

The Cougars (17-7, 7-5) led 45-31 with eight minutes left before UNLV went on a 21-6 run and took a 52-51 lead on Shannon Oberg’s 3-pointer with 12 seconds left.

Shamela Hampton, scoreless in the first half, finished with 13 points for UNLV, and Dominique Harris supplied 12 points and nine rebounds.

BYU’s Mindy Nielson had 13 points and Coriann Wood 10.
