Former Lady Rebel Smith nominated for NCAA Woman of Year honor

Former UNLV women's basketball player Jamie Smith was one of two student-athletes from the Mountain West Conference nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, the league office announced Tuesday.

The award honors senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. There are 429 nominees representing all three NCAA divisions. Smith joins New Mexico's Kelly Williamson as the nominees from the Mountain West.

Smith finished as the career rebounding leader in both UNLV and Mountain West history with 1,145, and she is only the second player (men or women) in league history to reach the 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound mark.

A four-year member of the university's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Smith served a two-year stint as one of two UNLV representatives on the Mountain West SAAC. She was also a four-time Academic All-MWC and MWC Scholar-Athlete honoree, she carried a 3.89 grade-point average and graduated in May with a degree in criminal justice.
