Sanford, Smith help Lady Rebels power past UNR

The UNLV women's basketball team, paced by double-doubles from Lenita Sanford and Jamie Smith, beat instate rival UNR 74-63 on Monday night at Lawlor Events Center in Reno.

Smith had 11 points and 13 rebounds, including her 1,000th career rebound, making her the second player in Mountain West Conference history and the third Lady Rebel to reach that mark. She now has 1,012 career rebounds, three from the MWC record of 1,015 held by former Utah player Kim Smith.

Mia Bell had 14 assists to tie a school record held by three other players, but not matched since Misty Thomas had 14 assists against Pacific on March 1, 1986.

UNLV (11-4) controlled the boards with a 53-35 advantage, including a 28-10 edge on the offensive end, leading to a 27-8 difference in second-chance points. Sanford had 21 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks, and Sandrine Nzeukou and Alana Cesarz scored 10 points apiece.

The Lady Rebels led by as many as 14 points in the second half.
